Over he last year or so sometimes instead of the engine cranking over and starting I would just get a whizing sound as the bendix failed to engage with the flywheel. On second try it would start okay.
It used to do this once a month or so but started to happen more frequently until it was every day. I booked it in with local garage who diagnosed the starter motor/bendix and fitted a new one.
New starter motor is a AC Delco unit, it has been perfect for just over 3 weeks until today when it started to wiz & not turn over. I guess the starter motor could be faulty but is there another possible cause.
Garage did say the ring gear might be damaged anyone got any other possible suggestions for the fault such as know wiring faults etc?

Given that you've changed the starter motor, I'd be looking at the ring gear...even just a few damaged teeth on the gear can cause your problems.
To check the ring gear, the starter motor needs to come off....check the bendix and the shaft...clean and lubricate the shaft, then check the ring gear by turning the motor by hand and look at every tooth on the gear.

Am I right that changing the ring gear is an expensive task as presumably it will mean prop shaft off, transfer box & gearbox off, associated gear selection linkage, exhaust etc.,disconnect front drive shafts.
Is the ring gear then a complete flexi-plate replacement.
