I would appreciate some assistance with a twin choke webber on a cj7 that's in Cyprus - hence I can't get my hands on it whilst stuck in Dunstable. The original carb was thirsty to the point of requiring its own personal oil well. I bought a second hand webber with manifold adaptor that was allegedly from a cj7. It runs reasonably well on the first choke, but seems to over-fuel when the second choke opens - that's my guess from my son's description of black smoke and very hesitant running. I checked the carb out visually before dispatching it to Cyprus and blew through all the jets. Any suggestion as to possible cause of the problem ?
Thanks
John

Was this the one on Ebay not so long ago by any chance?
If so I did some research on it - I was thinking of bidding myself. It's actually not for a CJ it's for a Suzi......
If it's not that one then I apologise! First thing I'd do is check the part number against the Weber website and make sure it's compatable.

Hi Ric,
This carb came from a contact through Difflock several months ago - possibly even longer than that. I did check with Webber at the time and they listed a replacement, but they had no stock and were unlikely to get any made up due to minimal demand.
I think I will revisit Webber and check the jet sizes.
Thanks

Hi John

sounds a bit jet like but unless the cjs ignition is in top order it will falter as the second jet opens

Although I've not heard or seen the vehicle myself, I understand it runs smoothly on the original Carter. The problem was that you had to have a permanent hose connection to the gas station otherwise the tank emptied before the next station. With the Webber, there is some uneveness on the first choke but it is driveable. when the second choke opens, there are clouds of black smoke and it drives as if a manual choke is out - hesitant, little power, relucant to rev.
Thinking about your comment on the ignition, is the Carter much more tolerant of ignition weaknesses than the Webber ?

The problem could be that the ignition has to be capable of utilising the extra fuel.
You can chuck as much fuel in as you like but without a good strong spark it is pointless. That is why people get the HEI conversions. They run at up to 50KV with a .050 plug gap.
When I had mine rebuilt I found suggested 'base-line' jet setting online. Have a nose around. You can get the same 32/36 Weber for many vehicles so unless it is jetted for a Jeep then this could also be the problem.
Having said that , thay can be Bast***s to set up.

the carter is almost as weak and crappy as the ignition but it sounds like ya have got more jet than you need i would stick with the webber but set it up and have real close look at the ignition stuff

Excellent guys. Thanks
