Right - time to pick some brains...
have seen a nice Cherokee TDi Limited for sale - ticks every box (well apart from the colour....) however its being sold with a 'clutch issue'.
now, 'issues' dont bother me too much however this one is new to me and I dont want to jump in, buy it and then discover its a bit more than an issue so any advice would be appreciated...
basically the owner has said he has problems taking it out of gear when coming to a complete halt - I presume he means picking neutral - he says it feels like the cluch doesnt engage fully and the gear stick sticks in what ever gear you are in. Changing up and down gears is ok, just when actually stopping. Also its not every time, just occasionally and is more irritating than anything else. Now to me this sound more gear box than clutch...? or is it....? anyone experianced this before or have any ideas....
unfortunately the owner aint very techy and has struggled to answer my questions on it - I am going to see it on Sat and have a drive/look for myself... believe he cant be bothered fixing it as someone said he needed a new clutch (they didnt actually see the car) and he wasnt prepared top shell out. Price of car has been reduced to allow for the problem.

Sounds like g'box sychro's worn.
If the clutch was at fault it would be hard to engage a gear as well as disengage.
Might be worth checking the fluid levels to!

sorry - its a 96 with 149,000 miles. the engine got overhauled at 130,000 so this is the only real thing stopping me taking it....
if it is the gear sychro thats worn would it be a complete new gear box needed or can i replace just that part???
'scuse my ignorance - gearboxes aint my thing.... :)

Sounds like clutch hydraulics to me. Can you get it in gear after you've been standing still with your foot pressing the clutch to the floor for a while? if not, does it go in if you lift off and dip the clutch again and try to go in gear straight away?

hmmm.... well, went to see it tonight. reasonably tidy, all elecs etc worked and engine seemed healthy enough... the test drive went well and it didnt stick coming out of gear once.... clutch felt fine, drove like my previous one did...
however, after crawling about under it we found fluid leaking from the front end of the gearbox... could this be something to do with it? am a bit concerned that the main gearbox seal is shot? although not sure if this would cause the prob that the cherry allegedly has...
well, what you lot think...? i have walked away but have a funny 'womans intuition' that it would be worth getting.... grrrrr.....
help :(

Use the obvious problems to beat the price down enough to cover the cost of the work if you can......cant go wrong then

was the fluid leak black/engine oil dirty or look like thick dirty honey/gear box oil or was it very thin like cooking oil/clutch fluid

it was gearbox oil - definately!

I have purchased said Jeep and the sticking in gears was diagnosed as the clutch slave cylinder. The bleed nipple has been broken off and therefore it cant be bled properly. I drove it 175 miles home without too much hassle.
Had a look at the oil leak and it's coming from the engine it appears.
I will put in on a ramp for a proper looksee and top up the fluids (axles were low).
I bought it purely for towing a twin axle caravan. It's now in the Dover area. Aircon hopefully being charged tomorrow

They don't usually have a bleed nipple. The OEM part comes as master, slave and hose preassembled and filled with fluid.

I Just saw that further in.
Will probably have to take that route as when you push the clutch a couple of times it free's no problem. That's why we thought slave cylinder.
I'm new to this Jeep lark :oops: (Normally tinkering around with American cars ie trans am or Chevy vans) and am trying to get my head round the anomolies. seem's like I've found the right place though.

Forgot to mention. I need to get front anti roll bar bushes for it as well! :wink:

Sorry forgot to ask. I assume all the Cherokee's are Posi rear axle (Iassume mine is a DANA as it has a rubber bung and not a bolt in casing) as I will need to put some additive in if it is. Oil level was low in Front / Rear & Transfer box. Gearbox level fine though! :?

if it has got an grub srew on the slave it can be bled from there yup you gat a dana 35c tell the guys what year and the xj boys will know about the trac loc lsd if you done got it or not

All UK spec diesels should have a Trac-Loc.

I'll check into all that my friend.
I just got a bottle of Posi additive from Jeep at £5.28 not too bad I thought.
The anti roll bar bushes were at £9.28 each plus vat which I thought a bit steep.
Time to start shopping around. Definately try and meet up with you some time.

Definately the clutch cylinder kit for the problems.
Loads of air coming out when bled. Think it's from the master cylinder and the slave cylinder is dry.
Bled it and ended with no clutch at all. Now back to being slightly better than it was!
