Title: Stearing box recall?
Post by: Anonymous on June 26, 2006, 08:54:34 AM
WHen you move the steering anyway there is a cracking noise, Paul had a look and the noise was coming form the steering box, which is moving about.
Could this be a recall item or similar?

Not sure about this but a have a feeling the earlier XJ's suffered from cracking around the steering box.  There was a recall to weld a re-enforcing plate to the chassis.

Someone posted a link recently where you could check for recalls against a chassis number.  Just can't find the link.

the way the steering box is floating around, this is def the problem.......of course it wont help that it now has oversize tyres on deep offset rims

get it sorted before it puts you in the hedge!!

and if i was you, i would change them wheels.

It might be worth putting the stockers back on just to see what vibes etc dissapear. The way the one is running out can't be helping matters.

By removing front prop and changing wheels you will be able to find out exactly where your probs are

the first one is the brake disc recall........you will get new discs, but have to pay for pads........dunno if this will apply cos yours has probably not got the original discs at your mileage anyway....

the second is the chassis cracking around the steering box mount...that will be the one you have a problem with then!!

i assume that even if the jeep is 13 yrs old, jeep should still carry out the work??

and just a word of advice. if you are caught on the street with your sway bar disconected or you are in an accidend you are in deep shit. if there is one fitted it must be working.

Engine? Bollocks. You have to take the entire front end off (nosecone, bumper, radiator etc.) but not the engine. Basically, once the steering box is off, two reinforcement plates are then welded to the chassis rail to reinforce it where the steering box bolts on.
