Will it make a huge difference in fuel consumption if I run my truck in permanent 4wd instead of just 2wd??

No. you're pushing the front axle round and prop with the rear drive anyway.

I gotta say, I've never noticed any real difference. Like mike says, the axle and prop are still going round in 2WD since there's no free wheel on an XJ.

I've read this being debated on various forums at length. The consensus seems to be that you might get 1mpg more in 2wd (I'm making no judgements, I always use 4wd). That said, muds are generally crap on the road, and my bfgs are scary in 2wd in the wet, so I'd rather have the piece of mind of knowing I've got some grip rather than knowing that while I'm in my hospital bed, at least I've go a few pence left over.

Tiz true, i generally leave mine in 2wd in the dry and use 4wd in the wet or when it's a bit greasy. In the dry, it's got a surprising amount of grip at the back end (I found taking the rear roll bar off actually reduced the oversteer). in the wet 2wd on muds is a fookin liability :wink:

Checked this on Trish's XJ. 1 MPG or less difference in 4WD. Wouldn't run it in anything else now.

NOW that was a full time 4x4 you could drive the bollocks off on a wet road

Completely agree - one of the best things about a 4 Cherry is hanging the arse out. 4wd = boring, 2wd = fun. Just my twopenneth worth. Ran mine on a 3.5" lift and 31/10.5/15 MTs and loved every minute...

an as for fuel 264 miles to a tank full in 2wd . . . . . . an . . . . . 260 in 4wd now thats bugger all . . . . . . most likely me foot . . . . . .
However people say to keep in 4wd is best ? ? ? but no one says exactly why ? ? ?

Keeps tyre wear more even, better handling in all conditions (unless you want to get the back out), halves the tractive load on the drive wheels, so you're less likely to get wheelspin when you boot it in the wet....... there's probably more, but it's time for lunch!

Wellllll, that about sorts it out, ill leave it in 2wd unless 4wd needed as i said before itis much more fun . . . . . . yeah . . . . . . . .
