Title: Spring Alignment
Post by: MK1 on August 03, 2006, 07:31:11 PM
The N/S spring does not seem to run in line with the spring hanger causing the shackle to twist. The O/S sit almost true.

I have loosened everything and bounced about but it made no difference. Is it something that will settle with use?

I think i would be tempted to weld a piece of box section into the middle of the shackle to hold it together and add more strength to it  :?

:imwitstupid:

Might be worth getting a tape measure and checking for mis-alignment in the chassis too.

My shackles have a bar between them and this seems to be keeping them straight, but it seems a little out of balance for yours to be pushing sideways. Are the bushes new on the spring and the body mount?Might cause it to limp if they are worn maybe?????

I've just been out with the tape measure and the chassis lines up.

All the bushes are new polyurethane. The spring hangers are new. the shackles are the ones which came with it (+1/2") that's why there's no brace.

I think it is the spring because measuring across the outer edges front and back gave 1/2" difference. The front of the spring splays out 1/2" wider than the hanger.

Tomorrow I will take the spring off and check with a straight edge.

I've checked everything this morning, springs are ok, chassis ok, everything else new bar the shackles, even measured the distance between the spring perches against my old axle.

I can see nothing that could cause this.

Everything sits square until the 'U' bolts are torqued up. it is however about right now.  :smt023

Does anyone have any other ideas apart from the shackles need bracing, let it settle or it's one of those things?

I had a similar problem. Found that my u-bolts were bent, so I put on some spare ones, and got the same result. On advice and after 2 attempts, I found that tightening the U- bolts evenly cured it, ie tighten each nut a little at a time moving around them.

What spring kit did you get?

Interesting. Do you mean alternating across the four on each side or the eight on both?

I have torqued them in pairs i.e. one 'U' bolt at a time, one side at a time.

It's a 4WD kit.

Both u-bolts on one side need to be done evenly.

You know what would help- Phat Phux heavy duty extended shackles.

Was only asking about kit coz I know of a new pro comp lift kit going cheapish, I might have it but don't know what else I need, ie drop pittman arm, longer brake lines, modded props etc.

Anyway shes looking sweet. :smt023

The 4" 4WD kit comes with everthing needed, pitman arm, transfer case lowering kit, degree shims etc. I have also added extended brake lines.

The kit was highly recommended by all on here.

I may have another go at my 'U' bolts but it's about right now and most seem to think it will settle.

As for the Phat Phux shackles, I did have made some but some swine nabbed 'em.
