Title: Cherokee KJ 2.8 CRD Auto output query
Post by: Tim on August 14, 2006, 05:23:58 PM
I'd like to know my Cherokee KJ's (now I know its designation) power and torque outputs, too. Why don't Jeep put these in the Owner's Manual? I've ben told it's 150 or 161 or 163 bhp; it's a VM engine, 2.8 litre CRD Automatic.

Anyone chipped one of these and if so, which chip and how good? I'm worried about the ones which show the same unit for the Chrysler 2.8 CRD unit as I've been told that these are Merc engines, not VM ones.

Cheers,

Tim

www.jeep.co.uk (http://www.jeep.co.uk) says the power is 161bhp @ 3800rpm and 295 lb ft @1800-2400 rpm. The 2.8CRD is an inline 4 VM Motori R428DOHC.
Merc engines are the 2.7CRD and 3.0CRD fitted to Grand Cherokees and Commanders, having I5 and V6 cylinders respectively.

When we looked at a KJ I was under the impression it was a Merc derived motor not the VM. Glad we didn't buy it now!

I think there were engine mods for the facelift model, taking the power up to 161. I reckon mine might be 150 bhp. Mind you, I went to the Motor Show at ExCeL and they had the Cherokee 2.8 CRD as having a V6 engine, so I'm loathe to believe Jeep UK!

Hmm, evidence seems to suggest that the 05 MY got a tweek, upto 161bhp, and that earlier 2.8s were 146bhp. Still looking for torque.

I personally wouldn't upgrade the PCM. VMs checkered history would suggest you might do it, and your bank balance an injury. (I'm speaking from the point of view of someone who has a VM engine).

So should I try to give this back and get a Grand Cherry 2.7 instead?

Only you can decide that. You need to weigh up the pros and cons on the car as a whole, and not just the engine. I can't offer advice as I've never driven a liberty, but I love my WJ (and hate it in equal amounts). There are a few KJ and WJ owners about the club, perhaps they can offer advice?
If you want cheap to run and quick, get a 4.7 V8 WJ with lpg conversion!!!

to my knowledge the 2.5 manual in the kj is the vm diesel engine, having once owned one it would not be on the to buy again list!!!!!!!

the 2.5 was 142 bhp, when upgraded the ecu,it was after the upgrade, went to 172 bhp,got rid of flat spot when picking up speed and gave big boost in power which you notice straigh off
