Title: Jeep cherokee 2.5 td 1996 Please help
Post by: xxxxj on August 16, 2006, 05:28:40 PM
My wife was driving the jeep to work when she heard a loud bang which then carried on until she quickly turned the engine off. she said it sounded like a pneumatic drill. i have not started to strip the engine down yet because i do not no where to get the spare parts from and how much they will be. should i just sell the car spares or repair any advice would be very much appreciated thank you.

It really does depend on the damage that's been done and the age/condition of the truck.

You can pick Cherokees up for next to nothing these days, so It could pay you to just relace it and (if you've got the space) keep the bust one for parts.

yes ok see it now (too busy looking for next video to pay attention)
"diesel" could be the camshaft and push rod scenario!! common problem i believe.........would make the right type of sound that has been described.

Take the rocker cover off and see if one of the pushrods has fallen out of a rocker arm. If it has, take the offending rocker assembly off, retrieve and check the pushrod isn't bent, refit it and see if it runs ok.

Title: 2.5td rockers
Post by: glyno on August 20, 2006, 04:50:45 PM
hi there im glyn from the midlands

This has just happened to my 1996 2.5td, one of the studs that holds the rocker on had sheared off i extracted the stud and drilled and taped a new stud in. It ran perfect for about 3 miles and then it sheared both of the studs off. I managed to get a second hand cylinder head from edm jeep specialists, Bicester, nr Oxford for £45 plus vat. I had tried vm diesel as i usually get all my parts from them but they messed me about for three days and they wanted approx £85 plus vat, so i saved a few quid there. I am still trying to put it all back together so i hope it works this time, if i can help you further please let me know.

Cheers
Glyn

Ironicaly there is a VM engine specialist that has an advertisment in Land Rover World. I cant remember the exact name. Sorry. But there prices are fantastic.  My old chaps cherry had something similar happen. The numatic air noise was caused by one one the push rods jumping out of its seat under the rocker cover. It cause the large retaining bolt to sheer its  thread out the block. Was easily fixed with helicoil (I think thats what its caused) Kind of a drill and tap. New bolt etc. All told cost £80. If it sound noisy from the top of the engine and the air filter box is whats making the funny sound then I would be 95% sure its the same thing.

Hope this helps
