Title: Water Leak
Post by: lizardland on September 21, 2006, 02:21:27 PM
I'm at work, just been outside to get something out my car and I noticed a puddle underneath it. I opened it up and had a look in the engine compartment. It's a 4.0L 6-cyl 1996 engine.

The Jeep had a new radiator recently, thought something might have come loose but when I looked inside it isn't coming from the radiator. I can't see exactly but it seems to be coming from the front of the engine. All I can see is water dripping on to one of the pulley wheels (the one driving the fan) so it is obviously something just above that.

I'm hoping it's a seal on the waterpump but I can't recall from memory exactly where the pump is. Am I in the right area? It looks to be coming from almost dead centre in the front of the engine, it's dripping straight down so I'm guessing it's not coming from the engine body.

It'll have to wait until later tonight when I can get home and get some tools on it to know for sure but I'm hoping it's nothing serious.

Regards,

Stuart

yup, sounds like your water pump mate!! either that or as youve had your rad changed it could just be a bad seal on one of the hoses....

Yep, sounds like the water pump. Local motor factors should get you one same day for less than 60 inc vat. It's not a difficult job. Might be worth replacing the serpentine belt while you're at it too.

Ta for the replies. Nope a/c hasn't been on as I've been suffering the whole summer with no refrigerant :( I've had another look and I'm pretty sure it's the water pump as everything coming off the rad looks intact. Thinking about it, it's been a couple of months since the rad was replaced so I guess any bad seals would have shown up by now.

I guess I'll be looking around for a pump!

Had the same problem on my 93 4.0 Cherokee - it was the shaft seal at the front of the pump, behind the pulley. Use a pry bar or large flat blade screw driver to pull back on it and check for play - any movement and its FUBAR - get a replacement. As the guys said, change the serpentine belt at the same time if its not been done recently.
