I went to my local jeep dealer as its closer to me than Halfords etc to get A litre of the above to be told its no longer made and I had to use ATF+4 instead.
Just checking this is correct?
I know the 7176 type is a ATF but something seems odd to me.
Anybody?

Dexron III supercedes Dexron II so you can use that instead. ATF+4 is not interchangeable with Dexron II.
It doesn't apply to your TJ but you definitely can't use ATF+4 in the AW4 gearbox found on XJ's. Dexron II & III are fine.

what unit are you intending to put it in? as i believe you have a manual tj.

Hi Mr Stu
Strangely the ATF+4 mopar label says nothing about being Dextron rated. This is partly why I am concerned. Also it says nothing about meeting the 7176 criterea. At the time I purchased it I was more than a little dubious but as it was £4.35 a tub I bought it.
Hi Peter
A NP231
You are correct I do have a manual 4.0L TJ 97. I intended to purchase Mopar 7176 or Dexron II equivalent as that is what I have always used in the transfer box. I have 3/4 of a container left and just wanted enough to do a change. The guy at the parts counter (Kings Jeep) told me it no longer exists and they now use ATF+4. I questioned him. He went and got a Tech who said "yep thats the stuff" although I remain sceptical.
I still dont think its right so thought I would ask.
Im the past I have always used this guide:

I get dexron II in gallon cans from the local Partco motor factors. Cheaper that way. I wouldn't have thought ATF+4, being of similar viscosity but more stable, would do any harm in a 231 as it is purely there as a lubricant and coolant, and being a synthetic oil rather than paraffin based is probably superior for this purpose (waits to be slapped down by someone who knows better)
However, for automatic transmission use you must use the specified type as the transmission is designed around the performance of the fluid used and at the very least you can experience problems with shift quality if the wrong type is used.

Thanks Peter
Thanks Mike

Mike, your famous, I just realised its your lube guide from jeepclub I have been using all these years. Thanks for that it helped enormously when I knew didly squat. Dont know much more now, but trying!

Sorry I'm a bit late on this one, but I'd like to say what the parts guy at Listers in Coventry told me......
As far as I was aware, my 95 AW-4 needs dexron II. However, when I gave the parts guy my VIN, and asked for the right fluid, he came back with ATF+3. I queried it, and he showed me the official Jeep computer which said to use ATF+3. He said that Jeep don't sell or use dexron II, and that all Jeeps which they service get ATF+3.

ATF+3 is definitely wrong for an AW4. Use it at your peril. Check out http://http://jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=648612&highlight=dexron+ATF.
If you have a TJ with a Chrysler trans then use ATF+ and not DEXRON. No 4.0 XJ's came out of the factory with a Chrysler trans.
Go with what it says in your owners manual - that's DEXRON II. Dexron III supercedes Dexron II and is also fine.
Just in case you didn't catch it -
ATF+ is not right for the AW4 gearbox found on XJ's

What was that again?
I was doubtful, so haven't done it yet. I did see the computer with my own eyes, and there are a great many XJ owners in Coventry with ATF in theirs. However, I'm with you on this, shame I've got a load of useless ATF now. Perhaps someone should tell DC?
