Title: Another Leaky TJ

Yep, Macs Mums TJ has a leak.

Wet carpet in the front passenger footwell. Probably been going on for some time as with husky's fitted didn't notice the carpet.

Dried it all out but checked again after a few days of rain & its wet again.

It appears to be comming in from behind the dash & running down the inside of the body where your feet would stretch to.

Aircon not fitted.
Hard top not been removed / messed with.
 
Water is clean so pretty sure its rain water as opposed to crap from road / puddles.

Removed outside panel in front of windscreen & put sealer all around the gap between body & plastic box (vent ?)

It had the windscreen replaced back in March when we picked it up from the dealer so was gonna get the glass removed / refitted locally.

So, apart from the windscreen idea, anyone got any other suggestions ?

Check all the gromets are in place in the firewall.

Put a bit of tissue in the plastic bit on the pillar, check it after rain, it'll tell you if it's coming in at the top or bottom of the windscreen.

Check the drains in the air intake under the panel behind the bonnet. Some of the screws are behind the rubber strip at the back of the bonnet, the rest are all visible. wipers just unclip.

Typical, three good idea's & then captain bling comes along  :wink:

Will check the drains, presume they are in the bottom of said intake box thingy ?

Peter, where's this here heater motor vent thingy then ?

The likes of Stew & I make no wild claims about such automotive things & accpet the wisdom of others gladly  :wink:

Stick some opened out newspapers round the offending area and hose the outside from various angles..see if you can replicate it..mine leaks from certain points but I just ignore it

Err It doesn't stop the carpets getting damp and condensation...leading to the condensation issue which will need cat litter which Mac probably won't like......please try to think laterally KD :lol:

who has carpets in their jeep anyway?? my carpets are full of mud........only a matter of time before they come out & go in the bin!!

Carpets and Jeep, just dont seem right.

My CJs always got a little puddle in the footwells

soaks up the condensation tho MM..just leave it in a suitable container in ther  TJ rather than get GAZ to throw handfulls in... :roll:

BTW whats wrong with carpeted garages?

And when it gets damn shove it in the oven on a low heat to dry it out and re-use it....

Note that this does not work got Macs wee wee :)

Pull the carpets back, (out is better) and sprinkle talc or chalk dust in the offending footwell and up the firewall. Hose the outside of the wagon, with the bonnet in both the up and down positions, and behold, not only will you see where the water collects, but most imprtantly the route it takes to get there. Drips are the worst and are notoriously difficult to trace but this method has always worked for me.
Make sure you check the windscreen frame and seals, CJs were renown for leaking under the windscreen along the frame/tub seal as it dried out and perished. First you'd just get water in the footwells, then as it got worse is used to run down the back of the dash, short out the electrics and drip on your feet!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions guys

When we found the leak we did dry it all out and then I stood there for about 15 mins with a hosepipe spraying water in to every orifice I could get to. Nothing, not a dribble

So we left it on the drive waiting for the rains to come, which they duly did this week and lo and behold water in the footwell.

So Gaz is taking it to the windy screeny shop tomorrow to get it resealed and take it from there.
