Hiya,,,just got into my Cherry to go to work this afternoon and when the warm up light went out I turned the key...the engine turned slowly for a second and then fired up,,,along with a really loud persistent bang bang bang which ran in cycle with the engine. Scared the bejesus outa me,,,and my little girl who was outside.Anyway,,I left it a few seconds and tried again,,,the same thing. Not had any indication of a problem, no fuel problems or water leaks,,,,had to top the oil up recently but thats it.When I got in from work last night and parked it up it was fine, and then all of a sudden,,,bang bang bang etc.Its a diesel, so you expect a bit of commotion, but this is terrible,,like theres a small fella inside with a metal mallet trying to get out...Anyone ever had this,,,any ideas are GREATLY appreciated,,,cheers all...Paul

have you looked at the rocker shaft for the push rod syndrome problem quite common on the vm diesel.

OK,,well,,I will have to cycle to work for the next 5 days,,,but after that I iwll have a blast..am I right in thinking that I should lift the rocker cover and see if any of the chaps have fallen out of place?????
-
that's it........you may need to replace the offending rocker but you can make a judgment when you have the bugger in you sights.

OK,,,well,,am not too sure about the cycling to work bit,,,butwill let you know about the job itself.Have you ever had to change yours???
-
not me i'm a wrangler petrol member.........don't let that put you off, this rocker problem has been discussed many times on this and other jeep boards and people have succefully completed the work required, as you will.
if you monitor this thread someone who has done the work will advise you more if required.
good luck,

thanks again,,and if there is ANYONE who has played with this problem before,,,,any gems of knowledge would be greatly appreciated,,,cheers ,,,and thanx for the help so far!!!!

Sounds like IOM has correctly ID. the problem. You can put it back on but eventually it will come off again, it's more than likely worn you see. Replacement best, but no need for jeep specialist/stealership, compatent mechanic or yourself if you feel up for it.

Yeah, that's standard. If you take the rocker cover of, you'll find that one of the pushrods has popped out from under it's rocker arm. Remove the offending rocker arm, check it for damage and check that the pushrod isn't bent and that the oil hole through it is clear. If ok, put it back together and it should run ok.

just take ya time and it sould all be ok
