hi i have got a 1996 2.5 td xj cherokee that is making a hell of a noise it sounds like the exhaust manifold has come off.I have checked the rockers and push rods i have stripped down the intake and exhaust manifolds and refitted them. I have checked the exhaust and down pipe for leaks, i have done a compression test on the engine and i have got 3 bar on each cylinder, and still the noise is there. When i have the engine running the noise seems to come from the intake manifold and you can feel a thumping on the intercooler pipes, any help would be appreciated as i feel like selling the cherokee and getting a bloody bus pass less stress ha ha thank you glyn.

hi there the turbo is free and seems fine i am wodering if the egr could cause this?

is it a thumping or popping sound ?
you say you can feel it in the intake pipes as a pulse when you hold them.
what is it like to drive ? is it a bit sluggish abouve 2k on the rev guage ?
just that i had something similar to this on my old xj diesel and the diagnosis was a non working exhaust valve lifter so the exhaust fumes wer forced out via the inlet valve when it opened, this inturn gave the pulsing felt in the intake pipes and reduced the effect of the turbo,
a solution is to run the engine with the rocker cover off and see if any are not working, then remove on at a time to see which one doesn't have an effect and that is the problem lifter.
the downside to this if it is a lifter its a head off job to get them out

Just read this thread again. If you only have 3 bar of compression it's well broken, that's under 45psi. A diesel should have 25+bar compression, that's 350 psi. Are you sure of your readings 'cos it shouldn't even run at that pressure.

hi there im glad you have mentioned the lifters, as i have been thinking about it and i was considering stripping the heads in search of a dodgy valve etc, and your reply has convinced me this is the way to go. i am not sure what its like to drive as the noise started on the drive and it hasnt moved since, but the previous week has seen the cherokee smoking more than usual which is handy when cars get too close just slam the foot down and let them have it ha ha also im sure it has lost some power but it still shifts thankyou very much for all the help god knows im going to need it ha ha

if you start the engine it should start as normal but if you rev it by hand slowly the engine will end up being strangled above 2k just when the turbo kicks in due to the exhaust pulse slowing the operation of the turbo on the inlet side.
before you strip the engine recheck the compression and see if you get values like Mike has quoted.
if the compression is shot then it's an engine rebuild. Give George a ring at the VM specialist as he will save you time and money and he has loads of information to pick at.
he can sell you a piston and ring kit for a reasonable cost. if it's a high mileage engine replace the big end cap bolts while you are at it. i had one fail on mine after a piston and ring rebuild and it destroyed the newly built engine, maybe a one off but it's piece of mind at the end of the day.
hence i now drive a petrol

hi there i had typed in the compression readings wrong it should of said 30 bar on each cylinder sorry about that, the good news is it looks like i might of found the problem as suggested it looks like it is the valves. The inlet and exhaust valve on one of the heads are not seating properly so with a bit of luck tommorow vm diesel will be able to come up with the goods, and i might be mobile again what ever the out come i will put a message on here. These cherokees are a nightmare when they go wrong ha ha i shouldnt moan too much ive had it for 4 years and it has only let me down 3 times, thank you all very much for your help and advise thank you glyn

i may have finally got the jeep running again i have renewed the hydraulic lifters had the heads skimmed and de cocked the valves as these were very bad and cut the valves in. it seems to have more power than i ever remember ,mind you i have only done about 5 miles and as i have learnt with this cherokee there might be a problem just waiting for me to get as far away from home as possible ha ha thank you very much to every one who answered my cry for help it was much appreaciated thank you all

are the heads the old style or new style. by that i mean the old style don't have valve stem seal seats, the new ones do. the ones without stem seals have been known to be porus and start to show that at around 60k+ miles

alright mate i think i have got a mixture of new and old i think i have got two of the old type on here .i did ask the the dealership if i can buy valve stem rubbers and they said they dont make them any more and there are none in stock ,fingers crossed it runs ok im going to go for a spin tonight and hopefully i wont be coming back behind the rac ha ha thanks .glyn

vm specialist in chesterfield area is the best source and infomation. I probably guess you already know of them

You won't have two of each. Early ones have the glow plugs located low down on the left hand side sticking out sideways, later ones are higher up pointing upwards.
To fit the later typr to an early engine you have to replace the end plates and valve cover and use the late 1 piece head gasket and glow plug wiring.

correct where you see fit Mike.
mk1 2.5td had individual head gaskets, good idea but still a pain in the ass. the easiest way is to machine the end supports to accomodate a one piece gasket of the required thickness (1,2 or 3 holes). the mk1 had no stem seals fitted. any new replacements sourced at a reasonable price from George (vm spec) ralther than steal bay, now come with the stem seal holder premachined to accept stem seals. plus they are of a better quality. these heads have the glow plugs pointing upwards situated above the injectors.
there are another set of heads for the 2.5td which was fitted to the ford granada/scopio, frontera, and later rovers. these had the glow plugs comming out below the injector and are connected by a std type bus bar rather than individually like on the jeep o.e. to remove the glow plugs on this engine is a real pain as there is next to no space to get them out easily.
if you want to go back further there is a 2.1td version which was then later bored out to 2.5
might have an old end plate still lying around if you might need one for a referance

The 2.1 TD is a completely different engine, it's a Renault lump which was found in Renault Traffic vans. A legacy of the AMC/Renault alliance of the 1980s.

hi there going by your information i must have the later type as im pretty sure the glow plugs are above the injectors and i have a one peice cylinder head gasket the good news is it runs perfect and i no longer have to use the bus ha ha bad news failed the mot on n/s upper ball joint and o/s lower ball joint i got the parts from state side on the a5 but now i am desperatly trying to find a ball joint splitter that i dont have to order from america its never ending with these jeeps ha ha thank you all for your help glyn

how did you get on with stateside auto's. never used them but on 10 mins at the most from where i am

they were very helful they even gave me advise on how to remove the old ball joints and they have got some brilliant stuff in there well worth a visit and they had the parts on the shelf

Is the 2.5TD in the XJ the same as the 200tdi from early defenders? I've just had a landie-bore assuring me it was but i found it a bit unlikely... :?

the landie owner would probably say yes it is but i bought a NOS engine that was to be fitted to a landie and found out that it was a nightmare to fit into the jeep i had. the general shape of the engine and layout is the same but the block was slightly different and didn't have common bolt holes for the engine mounts

hi sorry it took so long to reply stateside is on the a5 between nuneaton and atherstone they are very good lads and they seem to know what they are talking about they have got or can get anything you could want for an american car

Rangie Turbo D models had a 2.5L VM engine (as does the Rover 825D and Ford Scorpio TD). The TDi is an in-house Lardy engine.
