Title: numpty question
Post by: Dave69 on October 20, 2006, 03:04:42 PM
where is the ABS unit located on a 93' 4ltr xj ?

haynes quote  "under the rear seat", only a jack (drivers side) and what looks like an impact sensor on the other, no ABS unit.
front inner A pillars no joy.
under the seats no luck
under the lower dash ..... not obvious
engine bay......hmmmm not obvious again

ABS light on and its not working, fuse is ok, relay unkown (how do you check ?)
rear shoes might need changing, will excessively worn throw up an ABS warning ?
Just need to find the ABS unit as it's there somewhere

Clean up the ABS sensors as it's fairly common to trigger the light.

ABS unit on my '98 is to the rear of the engine bay on the passenger side and a small electrical connector box sits under the rear seat on the passenger side.

They did change the engine bays around a bit over the years but the ABS pump should be easy to find by following where all the brake hard lines come together.

You can also remove a relay or fuse (can't remember exactly) to turn the ABS light off if it's needed (MOT?)

I'm sure someone with a '93 or Dr Mike can provide you with more specific locations.

 :)

ok copied picture from the old thread. if anyone could point out the  "general" location of where it should be. I'm not a mechanical muppert but ive looked in the majority of places where they put items like these for other vehicles but this is getting a bit daft or i'm going blind.

ABS pump top left infront of brake servo to start with

The pump assembly is the bit just forward and to the right of the master cylinder, the controller is rumored to be under the dash near the steering column.

Its the domed cylinder just to the right of the washer bottle between the two black pipes. To date I haven't managed to locate the controller although as Mike says all the manuals etc say it is somewhere near the steering column under the dash.

Since posting the original thread my ABS works intermittently (usually after a long run), so I am wondering if the pump is sticking. This would cause the light to stay on as it 'self tests' on start-up.

the ABS control unit has now been found.

on a 93' 4ltr it is located in the drivers footwell,
on the lefthand side of the steering colum just below the ciggy lighter.
when yo look it is hard to see as it is buried under the major loom comming from the engine bay/bulkhead and a mass of big block connectors. you have to move and hold them out of the way to unclip it. unbolting it is another problem to solve.
