Title: 2000 TJ engine install into 97-99 TJ

Can anybody tell me if this is possible?

I ask because I noticed the manifold/header is different, but asume that if the 2000 spec down pipes were purchased it would fit?

Are there any other problems?

The story is. A guy was selling one on Ebay. I emailed him. Turned out he bought it from a guy from J33P who bought a engine/gearbox combination and only needed the gearbox. So he sold the engine on. The guy who bought it wanted it for his 98 TJ left hand drive. Discovered it would not fit because of the mounting points.

Would that be the same problem for a right hand drive?

I figured it would be very handy to have a complete engine with water pump, alternator etc in storage for spares or repairs or replacement considering its low mileage and good condition and cheap price.

Sounds like it would be a good buy if you can get it cheap. The guy that couldn't make it fits sounds like a prat, as far as I've seen the 4.0 block is nearly the same from 87 to 04. The only changes were coil on plug instead of a distributor and when they went to the HO from the renix computer system.

There's no reason a RHD motor won't fit a LHD. Only the position of the alternator and AC compressor are changed to clear the steering gear. The problem on a 2000 is that it has distributorless ignition, coil on plug coils, different wiring, manifolds and plumbing which mean that you have to swap all the '97 ancillaries over. Fitting a '97 into a 2000 would be more of a problem as the earlier head won't take the triple coil pack as it doesn't have the mountings in the casting.

I have a 2000 WJ block in my '91 XJ. The mounting points are all the same and all the '91 parts fit it.

Apparently you mayl need the 2000 M/Y motor mounts.

Thanks for your help guys.

It sounds a lot of work to swap the engine should I wish to and more like there are fewer parts that are interchangeable than I thought. So I would not have the spares I thought I would be gaining.

The guy has told me I can have it for £400 and its up to me to arrange collection.

Do you guys think it would be worth the money taking all the above into consideration?

Mike, I am afraid I am not that knowledgeable regarding parts. Sorry about my ignorance but what is a M/Y 2000 motor mount? Are they hard to find and would it require any fabbing to install?

I am in 2 minds over this engine and so am wondering if there is anybody that actually needs one? It seems more complicated than I had thought to use for spares or replacement, but if anybody would like the guys email to come to an arrangement in the mean time, then pm me and I will pass it on.

As Mike said the motor mounts are probably different.  I helped drop a 2000+ engine into a 98 TJ and we couldn't get the motor mounts from the original engine to fit onto the block.  We sourced some from an 02 TJ that had been written off, if you can't find any at a scrappy you should be able to order then from your local stealership.

It is a simple nut and bolt job, no fabricating required.

If this engine is the one I'm thinking of, it was swapped out for a 4.7 supercharged stroker lump and NV3550, until then it was serviced and looked after regardless of cost. If you need an engine, this is a good one!

Yup. The owner (not Gasser) offered me the engine and box about 18 months ago for £1400. Probably worth it at the time but way out of my league!
