Title: Bonnet Release
Post by: SB on November 05, 2006, 05:35:50 PM
Hi your help and advice required.

Am now on my third bonnet release cable on my N reg Cherokee and it's becoming a bit of a pain replacing them.
My plan is to fit lockable bonnet release pins instead and do away with the release cable completely. Therefore my question to you guys is would the vehicle pass the MOT with these fitted and no release cable? As I interpret the DOT MOT advice pages it does mention that you must be able to release the bonnet quickly but doesn't mention where from!
Thanks in advance for your help
Steve

I can't think of any reason why it would fail as long as it fastens securely.

I have some lockable hood catches on my TJ the same as but in black:

I have got an MOT cert whilst they were on. I've still got the hood release too.

Thanks for the swift replies have had various opinions on this from elsewhere but my take on it is if a rally car can pass an MOT on pins then it should be ok.
Manda, where did you source your pins from? Have seen some on ebay but they don't look as secure as yours

Thanks

They were from www.quadratec.com (http://www.quadratec.com) but I've had a quick look and they don't appear to do XJ ones.  :?

I'm sure someone may be able to help more on that.

The original cable had deteriorated and snapped  so it was replaced 1 month ago. The replacement cable I put in was not new  but seemed in good nick and that went on Saturday it broke in exactly the same place as the previous one.The weakest point on the cable appears to be at the cockpit end where the cable joins the handle as it has snapped here on each occasion.
Bonnet pins now appear to be the cheapest and most convenient option

give demon tweeks a ring for bonnect pins.

given the minimalistic approach to rally cars and mot's, fitting these to a normal car bonnet will be ok. If it is done well and no sharp edges you will have no problems

Have just sourced another cable to fit and have spoken to my motorsport contacts one of whom is supplying me some super duper pins as a back up!
