Just been recovered 5 miles from home after driving back to London from Manchester.
The Problem - All seemed fine when I left Manchester checked all levels and topped up where necessary. Oil was fine. Got as far as Warwick Services, stopped for coffee and noticed a minor spattering of oil underneath. Checked oil level and nothing untoward or worrying. Further100 miles left M25 onto A3 and noticed oily smoke which the oil pressure gauge drop considerably. Stopped and lifted bonnet and as well a nice warm oily smell and being smoky the whole engine bay spattered with a neat layer of oil. Thought recovery at this stage was the safer option.
Checked the obvious - filter was on ok, sump plug was there don't think there was too much oil in engine after. No worrying or untoward noises when this happened either. Still seems that there is oil in the engine.
Recovery driver suggested possibly that the oil pump was the culprit.
Any other suggestions would be most welcome and advice on possible cost to repair would be appreciated. Think i might need to steam clean the engine bay first!!

split leaking oil filter bad rocker gasket leak or leaking oil persure sender?

o ring seal on oil filter ? or the can to crimp ring on the metal face as this is a designed weak link

Inspect the oil feed and return to the turbo.

Steam clean the engine bay, then turn it on for a minute and look for where the oil comes out.

Blocked PCV valve or other crank case breather.
Pressure builds up on a long run and the oil spews from any orrifice!

First Job tomorrow is trying to get the engine steam cleaned !
Many thanks for your guidance and help. Talking to one of our 4x4 instructors today who drives an XJ and described the problem have been advised that the likely places to check first are the oil pressure sender and then the rear oil seal. Have ruled it being filter related as that was checked last night. Out of curiosity what should the oil pressure gauge read as normal?
Hopefully I am not looking at anything too major costwise?

Oil pressure should be about 3 Bar (centre on the gauge), dropping back to about 1.5 at tickover when warm.

Only 3 bar? At 14.5 psi per bar,that seems low! I would have thought about 60psi cold?

FSM quotes 25-35psi at hot idle.

That's very good for hot idle, I wouldn't think many see that! What about cold and/or at mid revs?

Not very specific, 37-75 psi at 1600+ rpm, relief valve opens at 75psi.

Mine has always sat at just over the half way mark on the gauge and never seems to change with engine heat etc. Water temp seems ok but will look at thermostat as well. Seems like all of the good advise I'm getting at the moment could be pointing towards the pressure sensor as the root of the problem as the gathering of oil appears to be in the upper to middle level of the engine bay.
Now......finish off the steam cleaning!
