Title: Alloy wheel question
Post by: keeko on December 13, 2006, 02:34:50 PM
I`m due tires soon on my 1998 XJ and have just been offered a set of 16 inch wheels and tires (in excellent condtion) that came off a nearly new Freelander. The PCD is the same 5x114.3 but the offset is slightly different.
Would I be right in saying the offset is 20mm for the XJ? The freelanders is 35mm.
I know they`re worth the money (£100!) but will the offset be a problem?
  cheers :?:

PCD is the same, and from what I can see, so is the 35mm offset. However, the centre bore maybe a problem. On the Cherokee it's 71.5mm, but dunno what it is on the freeloader - possibly it's smaller. Also need to know if the studs will fit through the holes, and are they long enough for sufficient threads on the nut. And will the wheel rub on the caliper?

Offset isn't an issue.it's the backspacing that can cause problems. Freelanders are frontwheel drive based so may well have too much backspacing causing the inner tyre walls to rub on the chassis and suspension when turning.

From what I can remember without looking it up:

Offset is the distance out from the centreline of the rim that the mounting face is located.

So for a 7" wide rim, an offset of zero would place the mounting face in the centre - giving a backspace measure of 3.5"

Working on that principle, for XJ rims 7" wide and 5.25" backspacing, I make offset as being 1.75" = 45mm.

I'm not 100% on this but think it's correct, there is information out there on this, try looking at some of the wheel manufacturer's websites and calculating from their backspace/offset measurements.
