Title: gearshift problem
Post by: ray109 on December 31, 2006, 04:02:33 PM
hi guys
ive got a march 1996   4.0L  CHEROKEE autobox
the prob i got at the mo is an intermitant fault on the gearshift
and starting
it seems the gearshift isnt parking properly and hence i cant start the engine until i rock the gearshift for 10 mins or so (very embarasing)
i cant push the button in to try it in neutral either
any ideas as to where i start looking or is there any adjustments i can make, trying to push the button i can hear something in the steering cover shrouding ???????

regards
ray

Not an expert on jeep products but definately sounds like a neutral start switch problem, bolted to the side of the transmission. I have heard on here, that you can remove and clean them, just have to crawl underneath. Could clean and spray with contact cleaner maybe?

Have a look at the gearshift/ignition interlock mechanism in the steering column.
