Title: transfer box noise
Post by: andyyam 60 on January 01, 2007, 07:37:31 PM
Hi guys

i wondered if anyone out there can  help.
I'm running a 2000 cherokee 2.5 sport and when i shift into 4h or 4l and take up drive i get a loud popping, cracking sound and it feels as though 4 wheel drive is'nt engaged properly the sound seems to be coming from the transfer box area
if anyone can  give me some idea of what to check for or knows any likely causes i would be really grateful.
                                                   many thanks, andy :(

Drain the t/case oil and see if you get any debris out with it. If you do, you've got a serious problem with the t/case. Saying, that, they seldom go wrong.

yes all tyres the same size, its been suggested by a local garage that it could be a lack of use problem and they told me to just keep trying it but it makes a hell of a noise and i'm a bit worried about causing anymore damage

tried it on both wet tarmac and loose muddy gravel, I know its only part time 4 wheel drive and should only be used where there is some slip for the  wheels, this is my main worry that the previous owner was a numbnut who did'nt know this and has caused the damage in the first place. I would imagine looking at my xj that it has probably never been offroad and curiousity as to what the little lever does may have got the better of him. anymore suggestions or
 advice gratefuly accepted.

thanks groove rider for the link it does sound very similar so thats something else to check. how have you solved your problem have you fitted another t/box if so is it an  easy or hard job?. looks like the xj problems will have to go on the back burner for a few days anyway as the missus has just been rushed into hospital . so far 2007 been a great year,NOT.

                         Thanks everyone for the suggestions
                             and advice. Andy

What set Birty's aside is that many of us actually go round each others houses to help, so no, we're not just full of ideas - we have tools and hands to help each other out of the poo.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes,my other half is feeling a little better but is going to need an op sometime in the next few days, hopefully very soon these 30 mile round trips twice a day aint helping my fuel consumtion or bank balance.
                                                Thanks again. Andy
