Title: TJ Exhaust Manifold

I've sourced a Stainless Steel exhaust manifold from the States for my 4.0l TJ - existing cast iron one is cracked - a mate (who is a mechanic) was going to fit it for me but inconsideratley is moving to France on the weekend and now hasn't got time!!! - My question - Is this a job I can do myself or is it best left to a professional and if so what should I expect to pay. - I've got tools (except a torque wrench and I'm willing to buy one) and am keen but lack the experience, I've also got the american Haynes manual - what do you reckon Dastards  :?:

It's pretty straightforward, you have to unbolt the injector rail and throttle lingages and put them to one side, remove the inlet manifold, PAS pump, downpipe then the exhaust manifold comes out. Some bolts are a bit fiddly but it ain't rocket science. Should take about 4 hrs.

Thanks Mike, I've seen you posting on Jeep Club - infact I think I sold you a TJ workshop manual on ebay (dont want to sell it back do you?). I read up on the proceedure and as you say didn't look too difficult. Is it neccesary to torque bolts as indicated or can it be done by 'feel'. Any trick to taking the bolts out of the head as I assume they will be tight. Are you a Dr or is that because of your immense Jeep knowledge and finally I gather from reading the various forums that you are doing a bit of spannering for 'customers' - is the manifold something you would do and if so at what sort of cost. Matt, i changed mine a few months ago and it really is quite straight forward, none of the manifold bolts were to bad to remove (as mike says just a bit fiddly), i think this is partly due to a fairly low torque setting.

I did, and also it's best to re-check them after a while once it's all heated up and cooled a few times.
You can get a torque wrench from around £15 and up, it's a handy thing to have so may well be worth investing :lol:

OK Update on manifold:

Started yesterday afternoon, I've got down to the last two bolts underneath the inlet manifold to remove and then off with the exhaust manifold.  :D  

As you said Mike, not rocket science although a tip to anyone following in my footsteps its worth buying some paper sticky labels so that you can mark up the zillions of cables and pipes that you have to remove

Also describing some of the bolts as 'fiddly' is a contravention of the trades description act! the last two bolts under the inlet manifold at the front of the engine are impossible to reach :o
