Title: Wrangler YJ Tie Rod info and/or wanted
Post by: robpark on January 19, 2007, 08:50:24 PM
I've just discovered that both the track rod ends on my YJ have 'excessive play' and need to be replaced. I realise I'll need the long tie rod plus the other tie rod end and even from Lighthouse it's looking expensive  :(

Does anyone know....

a) Will a US (ie left hand drive) tie rod be identical?

b) Is there one lying around anyone's garage looking for a good home  :) ?

Cheers.

I think lhd and rhd are the same. Lighthouse will be expensive for them.

I advise Quadratec's live chat/support to be certain they are the same. They'll also be able to sort you out for the bits you need.

www.quadratec.com (http://www.quadratec.com)

£1 = $1.973  :D

Have a look in the parts catalogue here. (http://http://www.xjjeeps.com/com_xjjeeps/manuals/1991_-_1993_parts_catalog.pdf) Look on page 506 of 1045 - YJ steering linkage and damper. The pdf is big, so it's worth saving on your hard disk. There are surprisingly few differences in the steering linkage between RHD and LHD. Unfortunately, the tie rod IS one of the differences.

Tim, thanks for the link - but I looked at the diagram and I can't see how the tie rod (items 1 to 6) would be different for RHD, surely it's just turned round?

You have a '91 parts list there.

Here are the '94 to '96 numbers for RHD....

1, Tie rod outer to knuckle, with RHD, 5503 6772

The Pitman arm is the only other part with a different number for RHD, all the other tie rod ends are the same.

Oops. You and Greggmo are right, I was looking at the 94-96 parts list. Sorry. I would however check that the diagram is your linkage, as 93 registragtion doesn't necessarily mean 93 model year, it may be a 94. In which case it will be a different part number.

Sadly it seems appearances can be deceptive. I spoke to Julian at Lighthouse this morning and although the long tie rod looks like it would just turn round for RHD, what I'd missed was the fact that the tapers for the steering damper and the tie rod up to the pitman arm would then be the wrong way round. When I blanched at £187 for the complete linkage set   (which is all they can supply), he did point out that the LHD tie rod would have only cost £65 - so it is just that the RHD version is specially made. Incidentally, although a hideous price, it is still cheaper than Chrysler. At this point I try not to think about L**d R**er track rod ends at £7.50 each  :?

Thanks for everyone's contributions.
