Title: Front Hub XJ
Post by: tedthefed on January 20, 2007, 12:45:34 PM
Funny noise from the front offside this morning and believe its the front wheel bearing. I believe the whole lot needs replacing. Got a price today but anywhere else to source from. Dealers & L/House QUOTES....
After removing wheel and a little cleaning not as loud.
Means the Plasma Rope will have to wait..... :(   oh its a 1995 XJ

Ordered  a pair from NETAUTOPARTS on Tuesday night so hopefully about 4-10 days.  $264.40 or £133.88.... + duty what ever that amounts too.  Shipped on Thurs.
But just thoght forgot to order spare bolts/screws in case they don't come off correctly. Local dealer £7.50 EACH.  ( X 3 ) each side so will have to be carefull, plenty of  WD.

that is a good question bubba. we was talkin about thhis before. why a cant ya just drill and tap them to take a grease nipple? surely it would help the lifespan.

i wouldn't have thought it to be a problem, the reason they havent done it as std is probably down to the cost of someone doing it.
All it needs is to find a suitable location so to give a maximum load  and easy access, drill then tap and fit grease nipple. I wouldn't have thought you could damage it unless your heavy handed

Pre 1990 XJs and YJs had rebuidable front hub units which are a straight swap for the later sealed unit. The only problem is that the hub flange is offset slightly less because they used 1 piece brake rotors, so you'd have to use the corresponding rotors or a thin spacer to line the existing rotor up with the caliper. Then you can replce or grease the bearings whenever you want. Don't know how much the bearings would be but the whole assemblu costs about the same as the sealed one.

New hubs  ( x 2 ) now in this country  £138.84   + £21.98 vat & parcelforce clearance. then new bolts from Jeep Dealer if needed . Not bad - collect from local P O on Monday. May not need fitting at mo noise gone today. While playing in snow & ice.............what fun :D  :D
