Can anybody tell me how to go about adjusting the handbrake of my Greand Cherokee :?

sorry dunno
, id settle for a handbrake that worked. think these things must be a luxury item.

Jack up and support the rear of the jeep. With the handbrake off, adjust the toothed wheel accessible through the grommeted hole in the backplate until each brake binds slightly, then back off a couple of clicks. Operate the handbrake lever then recheck the adjustment. If you have no handbrake at all, the parking brake shoes might have disintegrated, so probably best to have a look inside the disc/drum assembly before you adjust unless they've been inspected recently.

Rightly or wrongly, I always disconnect or slacken off the hand brake cables before adjusting the drag on the shoes.

mark, i believe you are correct.

Depends what type of Grand we have here. The old ZG is easy to deadjust, it has a nut underneath like an XJ. The WG, however has a spring loaded ratcheting cable self adjuster which is built into the lever and inaccessible without dismantling the centre console. The ratchet system is disarmed when the lever is in the fully off position allowing adjustment of the parking brake shoes unhindered by tension on the cables.

That'll be why you're a doctor then, coz you know these things!

The model I have is WJ; I'll have a look at it this weekend and see if I can adjust it. I'll be working on the front discs anyway as they're warped. - MOT time!!
Thanks
