My 4.0l TJ seems to have developed a noise that I was not aware of before I changed the exhaust manifold. Difficult to describe and not being particularly experienced mechanically (but keen !) how would I go about diagnosing what it is? The best I can describe it as a 'ticking' sound but not like tappets ?!?! I have recorded a bit of video so that you can all hear it, but dont know how to attach it to this message, failing that happy to email it to any of you whizz kids [/img]

the ticking is amost deffo going to a slight blow on the manifold i am gessing its loudest when the engine is ticking over cold and gets quiter as it warms but you can also hear it under aceleration up hill

Spot on Bubba, I torqued all the bolts correctly, should I tighten a bit more ?
-
did you tighten them in in seekwense yup its spelt wrong....so shoot me
-
Yes Bubba, exactly as the Haynes manual said, I think its agin the law to shoot a Sheriff
-
Yep, that ticking is the first thing most people hear when the manifold begins blowing.
Did you clean off the old gasket off thoroughly?
-
do them in order again and give them a quarter turn and see how it is you may just have dinked the gasket and need to go over the fun again
-
Hello Trent, yes cleaned all the old gasket off, did everything as the Haynes manual said...thought it had all gone to easily !!! :(
-
Thanks Bubba, I'll try that 2morrow :?
-
dont worry mate you will do it.
-
Thanks Greggmo, I find you guys a great source of enthusiasm (or should that read optimism) :D
-
Did you paste exhaust sealer on the gasket, both sides?
-
The studs/bolts have to be spotlessly clean or you may get a false reading from the torque wrench.
-
thats why i like torqe then so maney degries much more efective
