Title: AX-15 tranny noise
Post by: CrunchTyme on April 26, 2007, 05:27:04 AM
Hopefully someone here has come across this.

I have noticed a distinct noise in my AX-15 transmission recently.
When the clutch is engaged, there is no noise, however releasing the clutch , even in neutral, and it starts whining. From outside the jeep, I would say it sounded like a bearing, but that is just hazarding a guess. When driving , 1st and 2nd gear seem to have a whine type noise, 3rd and 4th seem to have no perceptable noise.  Draining the tranny, showed no noticible metal shavings on the drain plug, or in the oil. Oil didnt appear "burnt" but fluid level was  really low.
I changed the oil, and filled ot the proper level, and no change in the noise was noted.

Any Ideas on what it could be?  and is it major surgery needing specialized tools to fix, or can it be accomplished in a reasonable fashion with simple tools, care, and a BFH?
Any help would be appreciated,  If its a rebuild, is there another option ( rubicon 6 speed trans?

if the levels were low that can be the cause of the 1st second whine but
the other noise is clutch or thrust bearing related .

my xj has an ax-15 with a hydraulic thrust bearing others have a slave unit to operate the bearing arm .
Gearbox wieghts about 60kgs so a gearbox jack would make life easier to remove it but its not a difficult job to remove just a big one .
