Title: diff play
Post by: matco on May 22, 2007, 11:35:55 PM
the half shaft uj has massive play so i did as according to haynes manual and took the diff cover off to release the shaft, on inspection i didnt need to as my diff doesnt have a  clip holding the shaft in as the book states! anyway my question is i noticed there was some play when turning the half shaft(the bit that wasnt worn!) the play seemed to come from the carrier and smaller cogs is this normal? should i be worried? the crown an pinion gear seemed solid                            1998 tj 4.0 normal open front diff

Tis normal to have some play in the diff, as long as the teeth on the gears look normal I'm sure all is fine.

the fronts don't have clips. you just remove the brake calliper, undo the three bolts that hold the hub in place (13 sided 13mm socket) and pull the hub and the shaft will follow. there will be some movement in the ring and pinion as in when you turn the pinion by hand. but if you grab the yolk and it moves in and out or up and down then you have problems. as dingo says if the wear on the teeth looks ok and if there are no metal particles of any size in the oil, you are good to go. 8)
