-
75W90 GL-5 gear oil.
Hi does this apply to XJ's ?
as ive just got mine i ought to service it
it would be nice to know what oils to use where
thanks
-
Yep, same gear oil, but the rear in yours will have a limited slip diff as it's a Mk1 4.0. You need to go to the dealer and ask for a bottle of friction modifier which you squirt into the rear diff (only) along with the gear oil. Unusally for Mopar, it's not expensive.

Engine oil All Jeep engines run fine on good quality semi synthetic engine oils, the exact brand being as much a matter of availability and personal preference. The grade of oil may be varied for extreme hot or cold conditions as recommended in the vehicle operator's information. Be sure to use oils rated for turbo diesel engin

"Borrowed from Jeepclub"
Manual transmission AX5/AX15 3.3 4874468 API 75W90 GL5 gear oil
I read somewhere thet GL5 oil in the manual transmission accelerates the wear on the synchro which contributes to the notchy gearchange from 1st to second.
Can anyone confirm this?
Steve

GL5 75W90 is the factory specified lubricant for all AX15 and AX5 equipped 5 speed manual Jeeps (approx 1991-1999)
1999 0n models had NV3500 or NV1500 which use a specific Mopar lubricant for these transmissions.

Spot on Mike, I was concerned about changing my gear box oil and using GL5 after reading rumours about sulphur content wearing out brass/phosphor bronze etc parts in the box prematurely. So i contacted carlube explaining my concerns, i got a nice email back telling me that it is the correct oil and i would have no problems, they gave me the years as mike has stated also..........cya

Does anyone use Synthetic 75w140 for axles with lockers fitted??
I'm thinking about trying it in the rear to quieten the Detroit clicks and clunks a bit, is it worth it? and can I get it from the dealer??
Thanks all, good info again!

-
you dont get no clicking with a spool
-
Cheers Greggmo, it's nice to know it's not something I've done wrong and there's no point fiddling with it.
The clunks and the clicking when turning don't bother me much but most passengers look at me like the Jeep's about to blow up or something. Plus I listen to my tunes so loud I hardly ever hear it  spools front and rear and a blown V8 sound good to me!!!
