Title: Steering stabiliser troubles

OK am I going insane?

I bought a heavy duty steering stabiliser that is supposed to fit my TJ to help with the on road handling with the larger tyres.

Only to find it dont fit because its too FAT (a bit like me  :cry:

if you had chosen the pro comp one it is thinner tube diameter and fits fine. the others like skyjackoff and the like are thicker. if you space the rod end some more it will help but ultimately they do rub in most cases as far as i know. £30ish will get you a pro comp one mate. it might be worth keeping yours as a spare one on the shelf. 8)

Oh thats naff, thats the sort of thing that usually happens to me.

call the place you bought it from and say 'liar liar pants on fire it dont fit' refund please. :D

then do as greggmo says and go pro comp.

i find this a few times now on things you ar gonna have to replace it or fab a better mount i plan to do somthing on the gt when i can to fit an oversize damper and flip the tie bar above its curent 20

just curious, but do they have the same problem if LHD ?

Nope, it's the RHD that causes the problem. The stock dampers fit both ways, but RHD restricts the use of fatties.

I rubbed my fatty really bad, then i put some washers on it and that helped.. :roll: :D

How about Old man Emu?  Developed in Oz, so should have been well tested on a RHD TJ - and they have a stone guard fitted.

pro comp one will fit it is the same size as the stocker.

Yep had the same prob with a fat one; & it failed the MOT as a result;  :evil: fitted ok but any movement in the rods seriously crushed it like a can of pop.
Procomp fits & doesn't get rubbed; although once fitted there was an awfull amount of oil maybe leaking (or WD40 from fitting?)? from it so don't know if it got wrecked right away? Still 1 year on its still fitted.
 Best way would be to weld a relocating bracket on; oppurtunity for someone to come up with one to sell must affect nearly every modded TJ?

I made a bracket, it is a 5mm thick steel arm which is welded to the axle. I made a spacer where it was originally bolted to give more strength and rigidity.

Where the damper is attached to the bracket is a single sided afair to give clearance (just) for the removal of the JKS quick releases.

The damper has a stone guard which I also had to trim.

I don't think the £30ish Pro-comp steering stabilisers are rated as heavy duty so might not be up to handling larger rubberas well as some other types.  They list heavy duty dampers for the CJ and they are £55, I suspect those ones are more similar to the OME Skyjacker etc.

mandas truck is on 33 .12.50,s, with bigger off sets than stock rims and no probs whatsoever. if you start getting into 35,s maybe you need somethin more but there is no point modding it to take a bigger one fit when you dont need one. it is down to choice really. on the yj i have a heavy duty thicker one but it doesnt feel any better or worse than mandas tj. for £30 just throw one on and see before you waste time and effort moding somethin you dont need. have you made any desitions clayt?

I got one off of Explorer and I would say it was slightly uprated from standard, it stopped a lot of the shimmy on my xj. Before it was all over the place, now its fine.
Simular size and fitted straight on no probs.
