help , when in 4wd I get loud clicking noise ,I have changed front diff,replaced ujs in front prop.it seems to engage gear in tranfer box ok.

is it possible you could give a little more information about the vehicle you have.............so you could get a better response as too the fix.

it is 4.0l auto xj cherokee

are you sure it's coming from the front, also have you changed the oil in the diff? (front and rear)
is the cherokee modified in any way?

I'd say prop UJ if you hadn't already changed them. It's about the only thing a can think of that would make that kind of noise only in 4WD. Does the speed of the knocking change with road speed?

the noise is when you strt to move it click and bangs ,in 2wd it is fine, it i hard to tell if the noise is from the front or middle ,I have changed the oil in the diff and tranfer box

Yeah, I had similar. Front axleshaft UJ.

Take the front prop off check the joints, if ok, try driving with it removed in 2wd and part time 4wd and see if you still get the noises.

I'm sure I read on a US jeep site that some transfer boxes can't be run with the front prop removed. Can't remember if they were talking about if you ran a jeep for a long time like that or if even a short trip could cause damage.
Anyone else heard/read about this?

Well mine is coming off tonight cus the double cardan is buggered and I'm not driving to clyro with it shaking my fillings loose!

Is it the same for the rear prop (for when I break something
) and how do you seal the t/case so you don't loose fluid?

Had the same problem , turned out to be the chain in the transfer box that becomes stretched and then slips , works fine in 2wd but 4H or 4L constantly slipping i got a new chain and end of problem. hope this helps.

(http://http://birtydastardsjeepclub.com/forum/userpix/627_tn_chain_1.jpg) Yeah I'm with Andy if you get a loud bang in 4wd when you try to move forwards or backwards your chain needs changing, if you get a ticking noise that speeds up as you drive in 2wd a bit like a stone in your tyre tread it's your chain. The bang is the chain trying to go round the bottom of the front drive sprocket getting tight and jumping off, the ticking is the chain tapping the case. the bang sounds bad as if something is going to break. When i snapped the yoke on my rear axle i just removed the prop and tied a latex glove over it and drove home in 4wd.That was on a 95 XJ....didnt seem to do any harm...just a thought for future reference

i know the old qaudratracs used to stretch there chains but was not aware that xj did is this normaly on very high milage
i just asumed they had some kind of tensioning in there i did think maybe carden joint but this is a good point if this is a common thing

Bubba what i posted is a fact! Andys had the symptoms i described we removed the t/c stripped it down and you could see the problem with the chain trying to wrap itself round the front drive sprocket, i think his jeep has only done mid 40s but he will tell you. if i remember you can check the chain through the drain plug hole, you can just see it move it up with a screwdriver then let it go if it hits the case it's on it's way . But you will know if you have the bang when you try and drive in 4wd. maybe you can stretch it by not using the t/c correctly? hope this enlightens people to the problem.....cya

yep its true Bubba my xj only had 50 thou on when i bought it, when we stripped the case down there is no tensioning at all. I think mine had been shifted into 4wd at too higher speed or driven on tarmac for too long in 4wd, hope this helps.

Tag is bang on ..........
It happened to mine......the chain was stretched.......and also has tightspots which did this to my transfer box :shock:

Also the 4wd drive on a 231 transfer case is only part time.....
If you havnt got the 4 wheels on some slippery stuff it will knack the box and also make the big banging noise.......seems a bit pointless 4wd system to me really

Yeah maybe we need a sticky with the do's and do not's on the use of the transfer box :)
