Just been checking under the Jeep after a bit of off-roading, just to make sure all is ok. Happen to notice a small rubber pipe about two foot long (with a torn end?), leading from the top of the front diff casing (top right looking from underneath towards the front). Is this the axle breather, and if so, where should it go?
:-k :-k

tis the axle breather and it just needs to go as high as its length will allow. make sure it is away from the exhaust and rotating parts.
-
So were does it normally go? The end isn’t a straight cut, more of a diagonal rip? Is there one on the rear axle too?

-
yes there is one on the back too. if the front one looks torn it might be just that. it should have a little plastic valve in the end if it is all there.. as for the exact routing i aint sure...one for the dr mike or one of the other cherry guys.

It normally runs up the firewall on the passanger side of the engine and is cable tied to the wiring harness.

I guess this will be an ideal time to extend my axle breathers into the snorkel!!! What type and size rubber tube is it?
-
think its 9.5 fuel hose, cut a bit off and take it with you to motor factors.

the in the snorkel thing has always puzzled me a bit really... in the event of an axle over heating eg mad gearing+motorway trip=oil sometimes will exit via the breather therefore filling your air box with diff oil and i cant see it doing any good to be honest. mine are just up as high as poss and the tops of them always look well below the mud/waterline also most contamination happens through the axle seals themselves so moving the breathers seems a bit of wasted effort to me. what do you all think on this one??? cos i for one don't see it.

The breathers come out fairly near the top of the engine bay anyway, so I don't personally see a need for it, but it's not going to cause any damage if diff oil did get into the airbox - the airbox would happily take the all the oil from both diffs and still have room for airflow. Diff oil is horrible shit though and I wouldn't want it anywhere other than in the diffs.
