Ever Hopeful
Anybody point me towards a USEFUL guide to setting up a four barrel holley 4160 type 1850-3 on an AMC 360.
I bought a book on eBay just for that purpose but it must have been co-written by J Haynes 'cos it tells me absolutly everything except what I need to know.
Basically its OK when on throttle but idle is mega rich, it's sorting black smoke and hunting until it choke up and stops.
It ain't stuck on choke, that's manual and locked off.
If this was a simple instrument I'd be looking for the idle mixture screw.

This might help:
http://www.tocmp.com/manuals/Carbs/Holl ... 150-60-80/ (http://www.tocmp.com/manuals/Carbs/Holley/H4V-4150-60-80/)
I noticed you haven't asked on IFSJA (yet), and i'm betting you haven't called Andrew. They will be able to help.
Has it been rebuild yet? When they wear out, they run like shit. Get your rebuild kit from here:

Top bloke. Very helpful and knows his sh..stuff. Answers his emails and walks you through what you need. I might have most of a rebuild kit for a 4bb. I'll have to look and see what model it was from.

sounds like typical holly

Thanks for the help.
I'm starting to understand why digital MPI systems are becoming the prefered fuel system for builders of specials.
But I'm stuck with the four barrel for a couple of years at least so I'll have to get stuck in and make the best of it.
By the way the carb looks very newish, I'd say < two years old.
Having said that, it's no guarentee that it's not off a different engine ie second hand.
Who was it who described the carburettor as an ingenious device designed to supply the wrong fuel/air mixture to an engine under all loads and engine speeds?

Isn't a 600cfm a bit big for a stock motor?
-
You can stick the 401 crank, etc into the 360. Stroker anyone??
Loads of upgrades available. Remember AMC cars used the same engines and those things run 1/4 races...

hollys always seem to overfuel but no a 360 can cope with a 600cfm but to be fair the original motorcraft 2150 was a very good carb as a stock fitment no fun offroad as they are easy to flood on angles but a good allrounder
has your 360 been fitted with a non stock inlet

Cheers for all the info Tim.
It's gonna take me about a month to mentally ingest all this lot.
That edelbrock system looks very, well,...err..... damn it $2550 is the sort of price tag that's gonna force me to go out and buy one.
Not for a while yet but...if it were $5000 I wouldnt be the least bit tempted.
Mind you being the bodging tightwad that I am I'm tempted to go for the alternative Redneck EFi.
I'm lead to belive you can build an injected AMC V8 by robbing bits off GM V8s lying around in breakers yards.

Nope standard iron amc inlet manifold.
My carb book says 390-500 CFM for this size V8 in a low state of tune.
I've got a 2 barrel holley somewhere that might do better.
That's if I can ever find it again.
