Only difference is the YJ tail gate closes into the hard top rear hatch.  Vice versa on a CJ.

So either get used to climbing in and out to close it or fit a CJ rear window thing to the YJ hard top (I assume it fits - I just climb in and out!!!)

Been tryin to figure out an external closure mechanism for the CJ tailgate that doesn't look terrible but haven't come up with a solution yet........

Yes I'd like to see.  I was contemplating getting a L200 tailgate from a crap yard and shortening the mechanism to fit the CJ tail gate.

Be interested to see what you did.........

I've got the same problem (YJ hard top with CJ tailgate)
Gotta climb in the back to undo the turnbuckle thingies.
I've got four CJs with (CJ) hard tops on and of these three have rotten top tailgates.
I think 4WD do GRP frames $200 + shipping????
I'm thinking about getting around it by fitting a YJ tailgate c/w wheel mount.

To do that you'll have to loose the drop down tail gate (sorry but it's just not a CJ without it....) you'll also have to relocate your gas filler to the other side (it's in way of the YJ tailgate hinges) and you'll have to flip the gas tank around then so you can connect it to your newly relocated filler  point...........

Got me there!
I never tried the tailgate on my CJ but as the guy threw it in for free when I picked up the Hard Top I thought I might put it to good use.
You've got a point about the CJ tailgate, its one of the things that makes a CJ, but I'm not fond of the spare wheel carrier, it looks like it was stuffed on as an afterthought.
I wonder if I could modify that bottom hinge to clear the fuel filler?

I'm still looking for a mechanism that I can sink into the tailgate.

I'm in no rush though.  8)
