hi guys power steering fluid is leaking from the underside of my 95 xj derv. it is dripping down were the pitman arm goes in to the pump? do i need a new pump or can i get 1 from a breakers any advise welcome.
-
That's the steering box.
-
doh
so is it a new steering box or can it be repaired?
-
It can be refurbished, though dunno where in Liverpool.
-
from memory, Manda has used a place that re-cons them and does a good job
-
I knew that someone had used a place in Brum. I thought it was Mick O or Bubba.
-
check the chassis rail when you remove it as there was a recall to check and repair the rail due to a risk of metal fatigue. yours should have been done due to the age. mine was fixed by a chicken going by the 5h1t all over the repair plate
-
I've got 2 boxes one off 2.5 petrol the other off 4ltr both have no leaks Pm for price if suitable
-
thanx td but are the petrol boxes the same as the deisel ones?
-
The parts list gives 1994/1995 MY "Steering Gear" (DC's term for the steering box) for all RHD YJs and XJs as 5208 8004. The part no for 1996 XJs (only) as 5208 8487.
What does all that bollocks mean? Get one off a right hand drive 94 or 95 Cherokee or Wrangler - they're the same regardless of engine.
That's my interpretation of the parts list (http://http://xjjeeps.com/com_xjjeeps/manuals/1994_-_1996_parts_catalog.pdf) anyway. Check for yourself on page 503/504.

cheers tim
-
correct me if I'am wrong but I was told recently by a jeep agent that xj's and wrangler boxes are totally different
-
Nope. Have fitted XJ boxes to TJs and YJs. The main difference is between pre '96 and post '96. You'll find that the earlier ones are valved to give more assistance and so give less feel at the 'wheel than the later ones.
