Hi I have a 1996 jeep cherokee 4.0 limited and my bonnet release has broken.Where you pull the hood release in the Jeep it is loose feeling and won't pop the hood open. How can I get the hood open.Any ideas would be welcome.Cheers

not sure this will work but in the past what i have done is groped around under the dash and found the cable. usually if you can pull enough of the outer casing out it will release the lock ( best done with 2 people,1 doing the pulling on the cable, the other leaning on bonnet to help ease the friction) can guarantee it will work for you tho.

mines broken too - came off in my hand ages ago. i just have the cable hanging down and i stripped the black outer casing off an inch or two leaving the middle bit longer and hanging out. i just hold the black wire and pull the middle part with pliers when i need to open bonnet.
im ditching the whole thing when the weather gets better and putting bonnet pin catches on which i think would be easier than having to replace the cable

Thanks a lot guys.Forgot to mention, the Jeep is in Spain so you can appreciate the problem!. Will try stripping the outer cable this afternoon and let you know how things go.

hi if the cable has broken beyond the dash this is what you will have to do remove head light surrounds / head light units behind them their are the bolts that hold the bonnet locks in place their is one nut/bolt up inside the front panel holding the locks in place once you remove these the bonnet should open taking the pins with it thats how I did one that had seized solid

Thanks for all the advice.Due to almost total brake failure while going down a Spanish hill track
the Jeep has now visited the local Spanish mechanic, ( who fixed said bonnet catch in about 10 minutes!) and is now having brakes repaired.Hopefully bill won't be too many euros.

Finally got the bonnet catch mended here in Spain. The local garage fixed this then brake servo and supplied and fitted new brake pads. This cost 252euros all in.

glad you got it sorted.
