Title: hello and help with a flat battery

hello all,
I'm in France and stupidly left my keys in the ignition to play a cd whilst cutting a hedge (yeah i know i asked for it :oops: ) and totally forgot and now have a completely flat battery. I do have a 12v battery charger in the garage and my question is am I safe to use it on my Jeep Cherokee 2.8CRD Ltd Auto? It's a diesel if that makes any difference. Does anyone have any tips for charging?

hi david and welcome to the club

please try to put an intro but it shud be fine just charging the batt

if the alarm plays up just try setting/ unsetting it before starting

Or get a jumpstart and take it down the motorway for a razz, much quicker.

I would say it'll be fine, especially if it's a normal charger and not a 'fast' one. If the battery is completely flat then Tim's idea is not ideal to fully charge as the alternator requires a certain level of voltage from the battery to charge it properly (but that's only a problem if it's really flat). What ever you do, don't leave it flat for too long as it can cause damage to the battery.

thanks for the advice/offers of help. What a fantastic forum- i'm charging now as have no jump leads with me.....now where did i put that stereo code.......

A lot of batteries have two caps on the top.  If you have them on yours, pop them off with a screwdriver, and have a look inside.  You should be able to see liquid in the holes.  The level of the water is supposed to be at the bottom of the plastic tabs.  If it is not the battery will not hold a charge.  All you have to do is add a little distilled water if its low, and your set.

KJ CRDs have a red top Optima as standard. The're Gel filled so don't bother trying to open it, you'll break it. Also, a standard charger isn't the best thing for it either, so charge it on a low setting for 24 hours.

I charged for about 5 hours and it started first time. I drove around for some time and have just tried starting again and it started fine so fingers crossed......
