hi all right as ive had a slowly developing moderate vibration at
50 and above ive been underneath today to find theres about
2mm of lateral play in my front diff's pinion at the flange
but no obvious oil leak? this play seems exesessive to me ??
is it and how do i correct it i can strip n rebuild a rover diff in a muddy field
in the dark but i know sod all about dana's and my haynes book of
uselesness tells me eveything i ever wanted to know about my drivetrain
execept the diffs :?:

it's not uncommon for the yoke (pinion) nut to come loose.

yep that was my first thought so ive had the BFO tourque wrench on there
and well my TR works to 175ft lb and its tighter than that
-
snake my good man ..........in that case you have a problem inside the diff.
worth a go though ehh!!!

oh joy :?
i assume its one or both pinion bearings so can they be replaced
from the flange end or will i have to strip the whole assy
to sort it ?
-
did the nut move with the T R?
-
only by one flat of the nut its kin tight
-
it might be worth getting a re-build before any play knackers the RnP. do you do any miles in the jeep?
-
um its my daly driver :?
-
if ya got plenty of lube in it and it aint leakin just see how it goes for a while but i do think you might need a rebuild. try our Mik for advice on a re-build. it might surprise you how reasonable the costs.
-
Thanks :? i think
-
Running like that will damage the R+P. You need to rebuild it as soon as you can or things will get noisy and expensive.
-
A straight rebuild with new bearings all round would be the best way to go. If if wears ring and pinion the costs will be much higher.
-
cheers chaps i feel much better now :? :)
-
take the front prop of until you get it sorted, at least it won't have any power going through it
-
diff still spinning with prop removed, you will get the same effect if you leave it in 2WD.
-
indeed cheers all
