Hi everbody
Jeep Cherokee 2.5 Sport TD
A while ago the reverse gear made a bit of a noise when engaging intermittently, like the clutch wasn't all the way in.
Now, sometimes Its like I can't get reverse at all or first. Its only happened a couple of times but obviously is a bit of a concern.
I guess this is either:-
CLUTCH ??
GEARBOX FLUID LOW ??
Is there anybody who knows what the best things to check are ?? and is it easy to check the gearbox fluid?
Cheers Andy

Hi, my manual has that symptom i thought i needed a new clutch, but after reading quite a few posts on different jeep sites it seems to be the norm, some times very hard to get into 1st and reverse, i found if it won't go into 1st try putting it in 3d without moving then into 1st it should go straight in basically putting the gear stick in a gear the same direction as the gear your trying to get just for a second. you will be stood when your selecting 1st or reverse also there are no syncros on these gears........

You need to replace the clutch hydraulics.

if you decide to replace the clutch change the thrust bearing as well, you might need to service the hydraulic cylinder that actuates the clutch arm, i had a seal leak on mine when i had one
-
Does that mean new clutch or just master cylinder / Slave cylinder ?
Cheers Andy

Master and slave

Thanks for all the info, where are they located and should I be able to see fluid leaking?
Also any ideas of the cheapest way to fix them is it better just to get two new cylinders or better to do the seals ??
once again
Many thanks Andy

Just replace them.

I will have a shop around and get them replaced in the next couple of weeks,
Best Regards Andy

I gotta do mine too!!
1st and reverse a begger sometimes, put new juice in the system to make sure and no leaks but have it on good authority that after a while especially if its gotten hot after extensive slipping on hill starts etc the release fingers bend a tad which stop the pressure plate from fully releasing causing the difficulty.

Agree with Mike. Mine did the same thing.
