Title: Towbar on an XJ
Post by: Anonymous on June 13, 2005, 09:42:55 PM
Got meeself a second hand genuine Jeep towbar for the XJ, mostly it has to be said for use in recovery.

Its gonna be dismatled & painted all nice & shiney as you would expect of me but its the wiring that is the stumbling block for me as I have no experience in such matters & frankly dont want to screw up the mota.

Is it much of a job or is it best left to the experts to do properly at a local auto electricians.

What do you mean "recovery"...???? You never go anywhere near anything to get stuck in??? Or do you mean to help pull it out the garage when the battery goes flat????? :magnify:

OK, towbar fitted in time for pulling KD out of trouble at the weekend, now for the electrics.

I now know what goes where but is there a ready made place in the wiring loom to connect to. Been looking at a CD ROM on the XJ but cant find where a ready made connector for the electrics is located if indeed there is one.

Help gratefully appreciated as always

You need to connect at the back of the tail lights.

GazJeep

if you have a proper made for jeep tow bar wiring you simply get into the wiring in the sides of the boot and it will just plug into the current wiring loom for the rear lights.

1 thing i found out, mk1 & 2 xj tow bars are different, make sure you have the right one or the drop plate doesnt fit to the bumper/floor mount

Cheers guys, the thing fits OK, after some jiggery pokery it has to be said, its was just that the CD Rom that I have says that there should be tow system electrical connector under the rear bumper that I was hoping to plug the electrics into.

Trouble is I can't find it, its possible that this could be USA market only or as I suspect a tow bar was fitted previously at some point in its life & the alledged connector has been removed.

Alternatively the CD Rom I have is complete bollox

It was the ZJ that had a tow socket behind the bumper.
