Hello all My pals 2001 XJ Diesel has a recurring problem, On occasions the car will not rev past 2000 rpm. It runs perfectly just no power past this point.
He can tell when it is going to play up when he switches it off ,the revs surge for a moment before the engine dies , the next time he gets in and starts it ,the problem has come back.
When it is running right it pulls like a train.
So far it has had new EGR valve , MAP sensor and turbo pipes ,no faults show when hooked up to diagnostic computer by expert even when the engine is playing up.
I feel responsible he bought the XJ after seeing how good mine was launching boats.
Cheers Puggy

Most likeley culprits are No'1 injector needle sensor, crank position sensor or throttle position sensor, but it could be the pump itself.
Best bet is to go to a Bosch injection specialist as they have access to the Bosch diesel controller.
-
dont know if this helps but my 97 xj diesel had this problem but it was there all the time.
In the end it was the thermostat which someone had removed the workings to disguise a over heating problem.
-
I had a simmilar problem. It was a loose / leaking fuel filter
-
yup you are sure you are not getting deisel foaming from a tiny air leak in to the system
-
Where is the diagnostic terminal on the turbo diesel??? also it could be going into some form of limp home mode which cuts the engine power output to try and save any damage to the engine.
-
It is in limp mode. He needs to get the Bosch controller scanned.
-
Thanks for all the ideas , my pal was at a loss with this one ,he is going to have the Bosch controller checked asap.
I know he has been impressed with the speed and knowledge of the responses.

Hi puggy,
Watching this thread with interest, my 98xj td has this problem, only it isn't 'recurring' it's full-time.
Starts & revs fine when standing, then the rpm deteriate up through the gears when driving down to 2000 rpm in fifth = 60mph.
I hate to admit it but the problem occured after I pressure washed the engine, I did take care not to wet the electrics too much, but with so many sensors etc, it's damn near unavoidable.
Since dried everything of with airline & drowned in wd 40 to no avail?
I'd appreciate any feedback on your pals plight - cheers.

The most likeley suspect if you've jetwashed it is no'1 injector needle sensor. They hate water.
-
Thanks Mike,
Any test I can carry out, or just replace it, looks expensive m8?
-
Go to a Bosch centre and get the diesel controller scanned for faults.
-
'Bosch centre' it is - thanks again for the advice.

Right on the button Mike about the no' 1 needle valve sensor :
" Control module diagnosis Jeep Diesel EDC MSA 15.5 Error memory
4609 Needle sensor signal too high "
Well done that man
