Title: Hello.Help with my first Jeep please.
Post by: Petrnec on March 27, 2008, 02:07:53 AM
Hello.
I'm from oxfordshire and just enjoying my first Jeep Cherokee sport. Is it known as a XJ or is that something else.My one is LPG converted 1995 model.I was just wondering... I have read about a accident caused  by car crashing in to rear end of Cherokee which caused a explosion of the petrol tank. And I have got my LPG tank there as well!!! is there some sort of metal plate protection on market?
Thanks
Have a good day all of you.
Peter

Yes, the Jeep code for your Cherokee is XJ.

A 1995 XJ 4.0 actually comes with a petrol tank protector (or 'skid').
As your's is a sport, it must be a 2.5 petrol, so may not have one as they are lower spec and have bits missing.
So skids are available, and you don't have one, maybe you could get one of a scrapper 4.0. If course it might not fit with the LPG tank there.

I personally wouldn't worry that much, as 1) A tank skid isn't going to help if you're being rear ended by anything heavier than a Reliant Robin, and 2) LPG tanks are very strong indeed.

They did a 4.0 Sport as well.

There are no saftey issues with this vehicle in particular.

My advice? Don't crash!
Title: Thanks guys

Thanks guys.
Everybody is very helpful here. great forum. It seems that many people puts me off buying a skid plate for my petrol and lpg tank as it won't help in case of accident anyway.Another question. Is there any way how to fit a spare wheel on a rear end or anywhere outside really. My two dogs could use a bit more of space in a boot
 :-)
Thanks again and good day everybody.

Jeep made a swing away carrier years back, but they're very rare. Have a look on the bay regularly as they sometimes turn up.
The other alternative involves replacing the rear bumper, something like this.... http://www.quadratec.com/products/22202_51.htm (http://www.quadratec.com/products/22202_51.htm)

Hi thanks.
It looks very nice. But the price...scary.What about roof rack.I could just fit the spare wheel there, don't I.Any experience with those?

Hi,
I wouldn't advise mounting your spare on the roof permantly?
It'll reduce your mpg & a swine to get off if you have a flat (messing up your best Sunday suit)
