Title: Hazard Light: Failure
Post by: thorna on March 27, 2008, 10:54:33 AM
OK; Suggestions needed
The hazard lights on my 2000 TJ have now completely stopped working, the 1st stage was that only a couple of indicators came on when the hazards were switched on (1 side blinked on the dash), now however nothing comes on!
Will be enough for MOT failure in 2 weeks.
All indicators work fine when used solely for normal indication!

So any suggestions/fixes?

Thanks

PS there is tow kit fitted.

Do the hazards have their own relay?

Hi Tim,
It looks like the hazards are on the same relay unit as the flashers, & its mounted under the dash (according to the haynes book of lies). Which further confuses it as the flashers still work fine!
Any ideas anyone?

Without looking in the service manual when I get home, I'd be thinking it's the hazard switch that's broke.

Yep looks like the hazard switch is the problem; travelling to far & not making full contacts inside.
Stripped the steering column shroud etc.
Unfortunately the switch is integrated into the indicator arm assy. So i've stripped that down as well & reset cleaned all parts; muchas small parts & springs!
Rebuilt it once seems ok, will regrease & try again.
If not then I'll be looking for an indicator arm assembly!
Thanks for the advice!

All done- took a while to get the fiddly assembly back together right so the non dipped headlights came on.  But all good now.

So even if the manuals claim a part is non serviceable; it can be!

I'm going to stop using the hazards to say thanks to other drivers; its causing the early failure
