Hey,just wondering if any one knows or can can help me.I got to rebuild my rear diff, and not really sure how to.I am a mechanic but never rebulit a diff with shims etc.I have got a data disc which explains how to do but its seems i need lots of special tools, etc.any help would be great thanks leighton

If you just need to replace the bearings, simply put the original shims back where they came from and it'll be ok if it was set up right in the first place.

Thats the problem, lol,I m not sure if it was done tidy the first time.I got a 4,56 ratio, and was done by f.t.e,a few years ago, before i had it.The diff has lost a few teeth off the crown wheel.got a new ring and pinion, and rebuild kit coming tuesday, thanks

if you are not confident step away in my opinion. take it to Mik at rednex and get it done by an engineer who knows his shit for a very fair price.

If it was done by FTE it will have been spot on, but if you have to replace gears it does have to be set up properly again.

I am going to do the very same job on my Tj; I don’t think there is anything to be frightened of; the re-shimming of the ring and pinion gear is to get the correct foot print from one gear to another. And you will need a mag mount and clock to measure back lash. Have a read here.
