got a call from new member rooneysfoot tonight
he had bad noise coming from the rear axle when driving forward, reverse seems ok
i went to have a look, jacked up rear of truck and rotated wheel, could feel no notches but it wasnt smooth either, i can only liken it to when you turn a shaft with a dodgy bearing. Same on both sides
Also there is at least 1/2 inch of end float on the axle, is this normal.
We are going to drop the diff cover tomoz to see if there is any oil in it and if we can see any signs of carnage inside.
Im hoping its just the oil, as i see some leakage from the seal where the propshaft is and that is has not done too much damage.
Any ideas folks, its a 97 grand 2.5 Laredo, also has it got an lsd fitted
Thanks

Sounds bad
-
sounds like a pinion bearing, as most of the work is done forwards, its probably running out of alignment
-
1/2@ of float that sounds a tad excessive
-
Where exactly is this 1/2" end float?
-
both side bearings have calapsed and its all shagged

both side bearings have calapsed and its all shagged
spot on there, both bearings collapsed and the shrapnel has damaged the ring, didnt go any furthur after we seen that
its a rebuild

is it on par with pas fluid as that really smarts the eyes
-
it dont smell good and the stuff in lee's truck had a strange metallic sheen to it as well
-
It always smells like shite, but the metal particles are a sure sign of bearing failure.
