Title: Water leaking on my XJ

Took the Jeep for a drive today and parked in a car park.

I had to go back to the jeep because I'd left my wallet behind and couldn't get out of paying for lunch :D

Anyway, bit shocked to find a big puddle of water by the passenger front wheel.  Seemed to be coming through the hole in the chassis rail on that side (I mean the box tubing that leads from front to back on both sides don't know what its called exactly)

Checked the coolant and it was fine so I thought perhaps its something to do with the heating.  Couldn't see anything obvious under the bonnet. We'd had the demister on on the way up.

I did a search and I found that it could be something to do with the air con not draining properly???  I thought it would be heating and expected no heat on the way home but the heating is working OK too.

what you could have is a leaking screen wash bottle if it is by the front passenger wheel. If yone of the hoses has perished or come loose then you will have a leak. the mk1 washer bottle is in the engine bay above the strut top and the mk 2 is in the wheel arch, both will leave a puddle by the wheel if a pipe has split.
 the air con leaves a puddle under the car just to the passenger side of the prop shaft.
 if the jeep is parked sideways on a steeper angle than parke on the path/road then the screen wash will empty itself through the spray jets, discovered this at ribbo when parked by the horseshoe.
 if the aircon is blocked then it could drain like you have seen but try the carpets and see if the are not damp in the passenger foot well. Not expecting that but turn the aircon off and see if it repeats itself then turn the aircon on the following day and if it is a blocked drain you should get another puddle.

but you could always dive underneath and look for the drain and check it's not blocked, not sure exactly where the hose is but i think it comes out over the left hand side of the gearbox, DONT PULL the hose as it will be a barsteward to get back on

I don't know where the water pump is on a cherokee, but my TJ made puddles on the passenger side when my water pump was on it's way out.

Keep a close eye on your temperature gauge and carry some water just in case  :wink:

are you sure its not the condensate from your a/c

my liberty used to dump it in that area around the front wheel  :-?

the water pump is at the front of the block inline with the cetntre of the engine

if the water pump is weeping through the hole by the bearing it will drip onto the drag link and down to the ground just in front of the axle 9 times outa 10. check the bottom hose on the rad as that is also on that side. check that the water is from the rad before you go getting worried if it is from the rad you will be able to see that there is a loss by opening the rad filler cap when th motor is cold and looking at the level. hope you get it sorted mate 8-)

Cheers for the replies.  

I check the rad hoses and they looked intact.  It came out too far back to be rad water.  Plus when I checked it, its not the same colour - the rad water is a shade of "alarming brown" whereas this water was clear with a hint of oil slick on the top.

The passenger footwell isn't damp.  I'm thinking its this blocked air con pipe. How easy is it to get to to check?  

Got another short drive today so will take it again and see what happens - and yes, I'll take plenty water just in case :)

take it for a run but not use the aircon if you still got a leak then it wont be an aircon problem  then try the washers inc the rear washwipe

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead but I may as well post here than start a new thread.

I haven't used the de-mister all summer and having used it on Sunday I had a puddle of water under the Jeep on the drivers side before (I think) the rear axle.

I don't know if its A/C condensation (The A/C is used when de-misting yes?)
or its a blocked pipe.  When using the A/C for cold air its still frosty.

Its normal, its condensation dripping off the air con system. You can get some good big puddles depending on he weather. Pop the bonnet, at the back near the passenger bulkhead the is a black canister with a silver metal pipe coming from the top, you will see it will be damp to touch, thats where the condensation comes from

It's normal. The higher the humidity is the more you get, sometimes if you're parked on a slope you'll get a lot come out at once. Start worrying when you don't get condensate from the A/C drain.

Because it'll be going somewhere it shouldn't!  



As other have said condensate is normal.
