Hi All

I have a Grand Cherokee 4.0L N Plate.

When turning a tight circle there is a grinding/whining from the back axle. I think the Limited Slip Diff is on the way out.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a good Independent Jeep man so I don't get hammered by main dealers prices.

Dunno about Grands, but I had the same problem with my XJ!!

Sounded a bit like metal to metal when your brake pads are out........
..........got told to change the oil & make sure the right additive went in.......did that & twas sorted!!

Like I said, dunno if its the same on Grands........dunno if they share the same diff??

yup thats the problem most likely but grands do suffer bearing probs aswell some times dr bob will know this one as i think he worked in a jeep stealership for a while and may wel have dealt with this

Axle should be same,Diff should only vary by ratio but its definately worth doing the fluid first.Ive come across this type of posting many times and in most cases,changing the diff oil and putting in the correct additive for the LSD usually sorts it out and its the cheapest option :D  :roll:  :roll:

I use Valvoline DuraBlend® Gear Oil GL-5 LS (http://http://www.valvolineeurope.com/index.asp?pageid=b4a1fbfd7b6141de8290a51d44120d57)
in all limited slip diffs. An excellent oil requiring no additive and readily available.

Thanks for your replies.

So, as I am not a mechanic, but will to have a go at anything. How do you go about changing the oil in the diff or axle.

Any advice once a gain would be great.

If its like mine (XJ) you have to drop the rear cover as there is no drain plug, clean it out, refit cover & refill!! Easy as that!!

yup lie under the rear take the ring of bolts out on the rear of the axel be sure to put a tub or somthing to catch the oil it stinks bad so dont get soaked it holds 2or3 pints no more than that put cover bock on and refil it  and should be sorted after a few miles or figure of 8s on a car park

Additive is a main dealer only item, & while you are there pick up the oil.......

Yeah, The KD is right. The oil at Jeep won't cost any more than any other decent quality one. You'll need 2 bottles of 75/90 diff oil and 1 diff additive if you have a limited slip diff. Don't forget you also need a tube of silicone RTV sealent for the cover, as it has no gasket.

any good oil suplyer can sell you gear oil with it already in so you dont have to take it up the ass from jeep
