Title: Electric fan question
Post by: keeko on May 26, 2008, 05:28:17 PM
Would I be right in saying the electric fan on my XJ only runs when the demister or AC is on? And if so, if my demister / blower is not working my electric fan wont run?
Am I half right or am I talking shite?

Its just that I haven`t heard my electric fan since my blower has been knackered. (I`m waiting on a new resistor coming)

Do you mean the leccy fan under the bonnet next to the viscous fan? cos if you do, mine only runs when the engine is hot!!.....if I turn my demister on the leccy fan does not run,are you talking about the heater blower? #-o

Yes the electric fan next to the viscous. It used to run in `cycles` ie every minute or so regardless of whether my Jeep was hot or cold. My last 2 XJs were the same. Its just that it hasn`t came on since my blower (on the inside for demisting and heating) has stopped working.
I have another post about this and a new resistor similar to this one has been ordered

 ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-Wra ... enameZWDVW (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-Wrangler-TJ-Blower-Motor-Resistor-1997-2000_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33548QQihZ022QQitemZ350062315432QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) )

The above will sort my heater blower but I`m trying to find out why my electric fan isn`t running as it should as I know they`re connected in some way.

mine must be different then cos it only runs when engine gets really hot(like a kenlowe on a discovery) but obviously the viscous runs all the time, yours must be different to mine some how :smt102

Should run as BK says when engine gets really warm and also when air con is switched on

Fuses look ok, but havent changed the relay. Doesn`t come on when AC is on. Any ideas? Could it be because my rheostat (blower resistor) is unplugged as I`m waiting on a new one?

Does the A/C actually work? It'll only run the fan if the compressor kicks in.

As far as i`m aware the AC is ok (not that I need it in Scotland) and did blow cold air. The actual heater blower itself (which has packed in), doesn`t blow except on full speed which ive learned runs straight from the battery. Thats why ive ordered the resistor. I`ve had no electric fan since this happened.  :?:

I know its not a major mechanical disaster but I have a 600 mile round trip in a fortnight and don`t fancy only having one fan. I`m just hoping when I stick the new rheostat in, my fan works again.
