Title: low range
Post by: cherokeegraham on May 31, 2008, 06:37:21 PM
I can't get the XJ into low. The lever won't shift into neutral or low, it just won't move, it does shift from 2 to 4 ok. Help! I'm thinking about doing seven sisters, could i get away without low?

is it mechanical, have you checked the linkage is free first

have you fitted a lift and lowered the tranny somtimes it makes them bind

crawl under and take a look, take the skid off if you cant get a good view

have someone move the lever and see what happens, might be something silly

I have had to use my Hi-Lift handle to shift a few times.

Just had a look underneath & it seems ok, nothing looks bent. Will I have to resort to taking it to a garage & paying someone to sort it, I hate paying people to do what I should be able to do!

GermanXJ are you serious? I've given it some stick but I don't want to break anything. I've just soaked it in WD40, I'll see if that helps free it up tomorrow.

Has the lever been moved much of late?

If not it might just need a bit of 'persuasion' sure there was a thread some where not so long ago

No, I haven't used low for ages, I go laning a lot, but never use low. I think I shifted into low when I first bought it(about 4 years ago!) but not since. So it's self inflicted.

just keep trying with some elbow grease i had the same problem the old guy i bought my xj off never used his low range so 13 years later i had to pusuade it to move but it will eventually cos i dont think a 3,4" lift would effect the link up

nice one, make it a regular habit now to engage 4 low so it dont go stiff again  8-)

Rather than start a new thread, I have similar problems on the New 4.0L

But it seams that mine wont select properly ie it only seems to go halfway into its selection and get nasty whiring noises for a while  :-(

you need to adjust the link - do you have any suspension lift?

Currently a 2" lift planning going to around 4" but it does actually go into 4 low but only if I give it a good yank

perhaps a tad adjustment is the way to go for now.

the levers will all have a bit of a clunk to them when you use them, the thing is to use them and keep the linkages moving all they might just sieaze up with all the road crud etc

There's also something reassuring about a solid clunk from a 4WD lever, none of this "press a little button on the dash" rubbish you get with some modern 4x4's.  :-)

Nope, 4Lo is only part time.

Dont use it on the road or you'll be sorry.
