Title: Oil feed to rad ?
Post by: longman on June 01, 2008, 06:49:32 PM
Just taken my radiator out of my new (old) 4lt auto yj. It kept springing a leak every time I used the kickdown on the auto box, then it would self seal. It is in need of a new one. Are the two oil feed pipes that enter the bottom section of the rad. from the auto box. (for cooling) and if so, why not fit a proper little  5 row cooler ?

if they are the same construction as the xj then on the right hand side there is an oil cooler in the rad itself, this may sound odd but it is a very efficient way of cooling oil and still maintaining a balanced temperature to the engine.
yes you can replace it with an air to oil cooler but you will then have to find a location and what size.

addition

if you go down the seperate air to oil cooler let me know what you want as i have a reasonable selection of (NOS mocal coolers) for a fraction of the cost of a mocal cooler bought from a shop.

Thanks dave and isle of man, I think i'll leave it as is. But is it an engine or auto g/box oil cooler. The fluid that I got all in my hair was very clean and looked like Dexron 2 auto oil ! I'm having the rad. re-cored by the way.

yep transmission cooler the fittings to the rad are a push on and lock fitting. a bit like the speed fit for plastic plumbing pipes. they are a pain to remove of the rad
