Steps taken so far....
Worked out how to rip off the pretend wood stuff.
Got a fascia adaptor thing on the way ( dirt cheap on E-blag )
BUT
I have looked at the various wiring adaptor plugs and they all seem to be for ones without factory amplifier.
I am guessing that the strange box under the back seat is the Infinity amplifier so what do I do to connect the vehicle wiring to the new head unit?
Do I just buy the right adaptor plug or have I got to remove the amplifier etc??
All on a '97 XJ by the way...
Many thanks
David

the wiring adaptor plugs do make it easier. but if they do not make one or you cant find one for your make than its just as easy todo the wiring by hand.
one thing to remeber when it comes to factory amps....... after market amps get their signal from a rca cable coming from your head unit. most stock amps will get thier signal from normal wires. not as good of a sound but it works.
just a matter of finding the wire layout and matching it to your new head unit plug, crimp or solder, tape and your done.
you should have a extra wire or 2 for the amp. make sure you hook that up also. as all your wiring for your speakers goes through your amp, no power to that and no tunes.
hope this helps

My Limited Cherokee, '98, has the Infinity sound system.
I've recently fitted a new head unit, there was a wiring harness adaptor in the car, so I just plugged into that, very easy :-? Though the new head unit has rca outputs for an amp which aren't connected....
But as above, you could bodge it together yourself, or get the adaptor from Halfords or any good motor parts retailer.

I bodged it with loads of old parts I had.
My 98 XJ has the Infinity system too (plus a few extras
)
